Background: James “Bucky” Barnes was a ward of the state in 1935 who joined the U.S. Army. He partnered with an unpowered Captain America Steve Rogers, who became his best friend. During a mission at the end of the war, the scourge Red Skull stole and exploded an experimental Allied plane. The explosion threw Steve and Bucky into the English Channel, with both undergoing suspended animation. Steve, though, was later found and thawed. Bucky was presumed dead but later recovered by the Soviets who replaced his missing left arm with a bionic prosthetic and brainwashed him into becoming the assassin known as the Winter Soldier. Bucky was later deprogrammed, reunited with Steve and joined the Avengers, taking up the mantle of Cap when Steve was presumed dead again.
