Fur\u00adry duo return in sol\u00adid fun<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In a pre\u00advi\u00adous issue, I reviewed Disney\u2019s Chip \u2019n Dale Res\u00adcue Rangers for the NES<\/span>. I reviewed the game as a nod to the times of the late \u201980s and ear\u00adly \u201990s where you knew the ins and outs of your favorite shows, includ\u00ading the open\u00ading and end\u00ading theme songs. With the arrival of Dis\u00adney+ and Capcom\u2019s re-release of Dis\u00adney After\u00adnoon-themed games for cur\u00adrent con\u00adsoles, I heard that Disney\u2019s dynam\u00adic duo had anoth\u00ader game for the NES<\/span>. I reviewed Chip \u2019n Dale Res\u00adcue Rangers 2 to see if it would jump start my care\u00adfree kid memories.<\/span><\/p>\n

Res\u00adcue Rangers 2 starts off with our fur\u00adry heroes and their com\u00adrades enjoy\u00ading a well-deserved rest after stop\u00adping their noto\u00adri\u00adous arch neme\u00adsis, Fat Cat, in the first game. How\u00adev\u00ader, like most great vil\u00adlains, Fat Cat was able to mas\u00adter\u00admind his escape from prison and acquire the leg\u00adendary Urn of the Pharaoh to re-launch his fiendish plans. With Fat Cat on the loose and hav\u00ading evil spir\u00adits at his dis\u00adpos\u00adal, the Res\u00adcue Rangers are the only ones stand\u00ading between Fat Cat and world peace.<\/span><\/p>\n

Res\u00adcue Rangers 2\u2019s game\u00adplay is exact\u00adly like the orig\u00adi\u00adnal; you can choose either Chip or Dale to bat\u00adtle through sev\u00ader\u00adal lev\u00adels to do bat\u00adtle against Fat Cat\u2019s legions of hench\u00admen who are deter\u00admined to stop our heroes from sav\u00ading the day. Chip and Dale can jump, duck and used pint-sized box\u00ades to throw either hor\u00adi\u00adzon\u00adtal\u00adly or ver\u00adti\u00adcal\u00adly to defeat ene\u00admies. These box\u00ades have var\u00adi\u00adous pow\u00ader-ups, such as acorns, to replen\u00adish health, extra lives or Res\u00adcue Rangers plaques that can earn Ranger icons. These icons will give the char\u00adac\u00adter of your choice an extra heart.<\/span><\/p>\n

The con\u00adtrols also remain the same from the first game. Res\u00adcue Rangers vet\u00ader\u00adans will be famil\u00adiar with the con\u00adtrol lay\u00adout, but new\u00adcom\u00aders will go through trial <\/span>
\nand error until they are comfortable.<\/span><\/p>\n

All the lev\u00adels and back\u00adgrounds were done with great care, mak\u00ading me believe that I was play\u00ading an actu\u00adal episode of Res\u00adcue Rangers. I com\u00admend Cap\u00adcom for let\u00adting Dis\u00adney ani\u00adma\u00adtors work their mag\u00adic on heroes and boss char\u00adac\u00adters, ensur\u00ading that the boss\u00ades pro\u00advid\u00aded a chal\u00adlenge with\u00adout los\u00ading Dis\u00adney elements.<\/span><\/p>\n

As much as I enjoyed Res\u00adcue Rangers 2, it\u2019s not with\u00adout some flaws. I stat\u00aded ear\u00adli\u00ader that con\u00adtrol\u00adling either Chip or Dale would take prac\u00adtice; that is impor\u00adtant since dur\u00ading stages, you can\u00adnot go back to a low\u00ader lev\u00adel to pick up items with\u00adout los\u00ading a life. That makes things unnec\u00ades\u00adsar\u00adi\u00adly tough. Also, the Res\u00adcue Rangers\u2019 roles were dras\u00adti\u00adcal\u00adly from the first game. The first game incor\u00adpo\u00adrat\u00aded Mon\u00adterey Jack, Gad\u00adget and Zip\u00adper into find\u00ading hid\u00adden paths, scout\u00ading for ene\u00admies, and back\u00adup and reach sup\u00adport; they\u2019re now reduced to back\u00adground scenery with lit\u00adtle screen time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Audio-wise, the music sounds dialed-in like the music from \u201c1945,\u201d show\u00ading that Capcom\u2019s devel\u00adop\u00adment starts strong but becomes weak in cer\u00adtain areas. Final\u00adly, the chal\u00adlenge lev\u00adel is high, but I advise play\u00aders to have spe\u00adcial cheat codes enabled if they want to fin\u00adish this game. You shouldn\u2019t have to use them, but they are a must here.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chip \u2019n Dale Res\u00adcue Rangers 2 has deliv\u00adered, keep\u00ading intact all the ele\u00adments that made it a Dis\u00adney favorite but, unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, keeps some of Capcom\u2019s bad habits as well. The Dis\u00adney After\u00adnoon lives on in this small but sol\u00adid sequel.<\/span><\/p>\n
