Fifth time\u2019s a charm: DMC<\/span> 5 hunts down payoff<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Dev\u00adil may cry.\u201d To some, it sounds like the lat\u00adest quote from one of Hollywood\u2019s biggest action stars. To me, it\u2019s one of Capcom\u2019s biggest fran\u00adchis\u00ades that does not involve \u201cStreet Fight\u00ader\u201d and \u201cRes\u00adi\u00addent Evil\u201d that is a labor of love to play. Nero and Dante are back along with some new faces to raise more demon\u00adic hell across next gen gam\u00ading con\u00adsoles with the hack and slash style of gam\u00ading that put it on the map. I wait\u00aded five years to play the fifth install\u00adment of this series and the kick-ass pro\u00admo\u00adtion\u00adal song \u201cDev\u00adil Trig\u00adger\u201d helped move that wait right along. In April 2019, me and EIC<\/span> Lyn\u00add\u00adsey were on a spur-of-the-moment gam\u00ading shop\u00adping spree and not only did we pick up a PlaySta\u00adtion 4 Pro, but also we picked up a boun\u00adty of games includ\u00ading DMC5<\/span>. Could it sur\u00adpass pre\u00advi\u00adous suc\u00adcess\u00ades that defined the series?<\/span><\/p>\n

In DMC5<\/span>, years after the events in DMC4<\/span>, Nero has got\u00adten Dante\u2019s bless\u00ading to jump in the demon-hunt\u00ading busi\u00adness but one May night, Nero is accost\u00aded by a famil\u00adiar foe who has not only tak\u00aden the demon sword Yam\u00ada\u00adto, but also Nero\u2019s demon\u00adic arm. Vow\u00ading vengeance, Nero pur\u00adsues the foe to Red\u00adwood City where he is intro\u00adduced to a new evil known as Urizen. He, Dante and fel\u00adlow demon hunters Trish and Lady are swat\u00adted instant\u00adly by Urizen. Now hav\u00ading a HUGE<\/span> chip on his shoul\u00adder, Nero returns with a new arm and part\u00adner in crime, Nico, and sets out on his sec\u00adond adven\u00adture filled with old and new allies and ene\u00admies while mak\u00ading his name as a mas\u00adter demon hunter to sur\u00adpass his infa\u00admous uncle.<\/span><\/p>\n

Game\u00adplay in DMC5<\/span> fol\u00adlows the same high-speed action for\u00admu\u00adla found in pre\u00advi\u00adous games in the series. Con\u00adtrol\u00adling Nero, Dante and the newest char\u00adac\u00adter V is per\u00adfect. Nero still has his trusty sword Red Queen and revolver Blue Rose, but instead of his Dev\u00adil Bringer he uses a pros\u00adthet\u00adic arm called a Dev\u00adil Break\u00ader, which was devel\u00adoped by Nico. It has extra punch than the Dev\u00adil Bringer and can be upgrad\u00aded after bat\u00adtles with var\u00adi\u00adous bosses.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dante has his dual pis\u00adtols Ebony and Ivory as well as his usu\u00adal swords Rebel\u00adlion and Spar\u00adta, but also has five addi\u00adtions: Cav\u00adi\u00adlare (a motor\u00adcy\u00adcle that when sep\u00ada\u00adrat\u00aded, becomes a buz\u00adz\u00adsaw-like weapon); Bal\u00adrog (yes, THAT<\/span> Bal\u00adrog), gauntlets and boots that increas\u00ades Dante\u2019s melee pow\u00ader ten\u00adfold; KalinaAnn2, a mod\u00adi\u00adfied ver\u00adsion of the Kali\u00adnaAnn used in DMC3<\/span>; and, Dr. Faust, a hat that shoots out red orbs when worn.<\/span><\/p>\n

V has some tricks up his sleeve with his famil\u00adiars Grif\u00adfon, a demon hawk capa\u00adble of fir\u00ading light\u00adning bolts and pro\u00adjec\u00adtiles; Shad\u00adow, a pan\u00adther-like famil\u00adiar that is melee com\u00adbat ori\u00adent\u00aded, using its body to form blade and nee\u00addle weapons; and, final\u00adly Night\u00admare, a golem-famil\u00adiar that moves slow\u00adly, but packs a MAJOR<\/span> punch against giant ene\u00admies. I should also note that Night\u00admare can change his height to titan-lev\u00adel and use a huge laser beam to destroy ene\u00admy boss\u00ades, which allows V to use his Roy\u00adal Fork cane and its copies to land the fin\u00adish blow.<\/span><\/p>\n

Anoth\u00ader fea\u00adture I liked in DMC5<\/span> was the train\u00ading ses\u00adsion that allows you to learn and prac\u00adtice avail\u00adable skills before pur\u00adchas\u00ading them, allow\u00ading you to decide whether to buy or hold off.<\/span><\/p>\n

The RE5<\/span> engine brings every detail to life, com\u00adple\u00adment\u00ading Dol\u00adby Atmos sound\u2019s abil\u00adi\u00adties, which made me think I was play\u00ading a 3D<\/span> movie instead of a video game. The voice cast is a mix of well-known and new voice actors led by Reuben Lang\u00addon, John\u00adny Yong Bosch and Daniel South\u00adworth repris\u00ading their roles as Dante, Nero and Vergil, respec\u00adtive\u00adly. Stephanie Sheh returns as Kyrie but in voice form only. I also give kudos to Bri\u00adan Han\u00adford for voic\u00ading V and Faye Kingslee as Nico. Brad Ven\u00adable as Grif\u00adfon stole the show, and Kate Hig\u00adgins (Bleach, Code Geass) and Wendee Lee were excel\u00adlent as Lady and Trish.<\/span><\/p>\n

The only neg\u00ada\u00adtive thing I have about the game is the cam\u00adera con\u00adtrol. It has improved GREATLY<\/span>, but it still takes some time to mas\u00adter\u00adful\u00adly plan a character\u2019s next move. The pow\u00ader-up sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion that occurred in DMC4<\/span> was fixed, but you still need to con\u00adserve your red orbs, espe\u00adcial\u00adly if you use Dr. Faust.<\/span><\/p>\n

DMC5<\/span> is wor\u00adthy of replay because of its excel\u00adlent blend of action, dra\u00adma and envi\u00adron\u00adment. Cap\u00adcom is doing this series right again and while I don\u2019t agree that milk\u00ading a fran\u00adchise is the best busi\u00adness deci\u00adsion, DMC<\/span> fans can begin to for\u00adgive Cap\u00adcom for its lack of judge\u00adment for DMC<\/span>: Dev\u00adil May Cry. Let the heal\u00ading begin.<\/span><\/p>\n
