When Tetris and Dis\u00adney col\u00adlide<\/span> <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Mess\u00ading with an old and uni\u00adver\u00adsal\u00adly loved favorite such as Tetris is a risky propo\u00adsi\u00adtion. You can get it right or mess it up hor\u00adri\u00adbly, where it is for\u00adev\u00ader known as the \u201cmessed up ver\u00adsion of Tetris.\u201d Luck\u00adi\u00adly, Mag\u00adi\u00adcal Tetris Chal\u00adlenge by Cap\u00adcom man\u00adages to dodge that label and add a few ele\u00adments to the main game to refresh an old\u00ader title.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mag\u00adi\u00adcal Tetris is, at its core, a fun game with lots of charm to spread around. There are mul\u00adti\u00adple modes to choose from and the vari\u00adety helps the replay fac\u00adtor long after the nov\u00adel\u00adty of com\u00adbo\u00ading wears off. The sto\u00adry mode is the oth\u00ader mode most played at GI<\/span>, and is based off the new Mag\u00adi\u00adcal Tetris mode. While I\u2019m not fond of the cliffhang\u00ader by dif\u00adfi\u00adcul\u00adty lev\u00adel method, the sto\u00adry is ser\u00advice\u00adable and moves the action for\u00adward with a nice added Dis\u00adney touch. Main\u00adstays such as Mick\u00adey, Min\u00adnie, Don\u00adald and Goofy fill out the cast, though you can only play as these four.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mag\u00adi\u00adcal Tetris earns its bread and but\u00adter in the way it builds on the Tetris for\u00admu\u00adla. With Tetris in the name and designed to appeal to a mass audi\u00adence using that, Mag\u00adi\u00adcal Tetris starts out with the basics: Cre\u00adate and clear lines using sev\u00aden let\u00adter-shaped pieces. Clear four lines and you get a Tetris.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ah, but here\u00adin lies the addi\u00adtions to Mag\u00adi\u00adcal Tetris and where the basics end and advanced play begins: For every line cleared, a small amount of ener\u00adgy is added to a mag\u00adic meter. Fill up the mag\u00adic meter and you get what we\u2019ve termed at GI<\/span> as a break\u00addown: All pieces restruc\u00adture to cre\u00adate a neat space and a large por\u00adtion of the well where your pieces fall is wiped clean. Also, clear\u00ading lines cre\u00adates com\u00adbos, which can be coun\u00adtered until a piece is shaped 10 by 10. Com\u00adbos and coun\u00adters cre\u00adates a back and forth, dur\u00ading which odd\u00adly shaped pieces are cre\u00adat\u00aded and fall into the play field. By set\u00adting up the pieces in a decent shape in your well, you can achieve what is called a pen\u00adtris, or five lines cleared<\/span>
\nsimul\u00adta\u00adne\u00adous\u00adly.<\/span><\/p>\n

Com\u00adbo\u00ading and coun\u00adter\u00ading makes the game\u00adplay fun and adds an increas\u00ading lev\u00adel of com\u00adpet\u00adi\u00adtive\u00adness and urgency to every match. Even if you\u2019re not the most Tetris-com\u00adpe\u00adtent gamer, Mag\u00adi\u00adcal Tetris does an excel\u00adlent job invit\u00ading all skill lev\u00adels in to learn and get bet\u00adter. The basics are quick\u00adly explained and the advanced tech\u00adniques are made plain as you go along. That helps in the fran\u00adtic atmos\u00adphere of a spir\u00adit\u00aded two-play\u00ader human match, where any\u00adthing and usu\u00adal\u00adly every\u00adthing can happen.<\/span><\/p>\n

The game shines in its visu\u00adals, which ben\u00ade\u00adfit from that Dis\u00adney touch. The game is bright and col\u00ador\u00adful and designed in the way of Dis\u00adney games and ani\u00adma\u00adtion, mean\u00ading it\u2019s top-notch through and through. The graph\u00adics are still good for an N64-era game and haven\u2019t aged bad\u00adly. The sound\u00adtrack has aged well, too, and is still one of the best of the era. Each character\u2019s stage is mem\u00ado\u00adrably themed and stands out enough for you to remem\u00adber it well after your game is over.<\/span>
\nHav\u00ading played the major\u00adi\u00adty of the Tetris spin\u00adoffs and cre\u00adations out on the mar\u00adket for the past 30 years, I need to have some\u00adthing that push\u00ades me to play. Mag\u00adi\u00adcal Tetris suc\u00adceeds in adding to the Tetris for\u00admu\u00adla just enough to buy its way in to my library and stick around through charm and abil\u00adi\u00adty. This is an excel\u00adlent Tetris spin job.<\/span><\/p>\n
