A mas\u00adter\u00adpiece in the making<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Super Mario Mak\u00ader is the Mario game that isn\u2019t quite the stan\u00addard Mario fare but is the game you didn\u2019t know you need\u00aded. It is, along\u00adside few oth\u00aders, the killer app for the Wii U.
\nLet\u2019s start with what Mario Mak\u00ader isn\u2019t. This isn\u2019t your reg\u00adu\u00adlar Mario hop and bop, save the princess adven\u00adture. In fact, lit\u00adtle sto\u00adry if any exists and Peach is bare\u00adly men\u00adtioned or ref\u00ader\u00adenced. This is Mario stripped down to his bare ele\u00adments, show\u00ading how his adven\u00adtures come togeth\u00ader. It\u2019s also real\u00adly an excuse to revis\u00adit Mario\u2019s past and get some of the new\u00ader enthu\u00adsi\u00adasts up to speed, just in time for Mario\u2019s 30th birthday.
\nThe stage is set by uti\u00adliz\u00ading some of Mario\u2019s great\u00adest games. Mak\u00ading an appear\u00adance are ele\u00adments from the orig\u00adi\u00adnal plat\u00adform\u00ading mas\u00adter\u00adpieces Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3. Join\u00ading those are sec\u00adondary great\u00adest hit Super Mario World and the more recent hit New Super Mario Bros. U. All four games rep\u00adre\u00adsent some crown\u00ading achieve\u00adment for the every\u00adday plumber and thus have some mer\u00adit for mak\u00ading you revis\u00adit these set pieces to cre\u00adate your own masterpiece.
\nCre\u00adat\u00ading that mas\u00adter\u00adpiece is sim\u00adple and intu\u00aditive. The lev\u00adel edi\u00adtor focus\u00ades on lev\u00adels, not worlds, and wise\u00adly makes the process quick and pain\u00adless. Want to make a lev\u00adel with 10 Bowsers under\u00adwa\u00adter only to face off against a lone Ham\u00admer Bros. before the end gate in Super Mario world style and graph\u00adics? That\u2019s easy. But this is also where the only gripe that I have with the game rears its head. While you may want to make that stun\u00adning gaunt\u00adlet of pain imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly, you\u2019re lim\u00adit\u00aded because of the game\u2019s unlock\u00ading sys\u00adtem. Game styles beyond the initial two and ulti\u00admate\u00adly the major\u00adi\u00adty of your cre\u00adation library are unlocked via a time sys\u00adtem that goes by days. You can speed it up, but it\u2019s intend\u00aded to make you the cre\u00adator spend sev\u00ader\u00adal days try\u00ading out the sys\u00adtem and get\u00adting a feel for new ele\u00adments in a paced envi\u00adron\u00adment. I can appre\u00adci\u00adate the sense of not want\u00adi\u00adng too many ele\u00adments all at once, but the sys\u00adtem is a lit\u00adtle slow and frus\u00adtrat\u00ading when I have a mil\u00adlion ideas that I can\u2019t ful\u00adly imple\u00adment for sev\u00ader\u00adal days initially.
\nMario Mak\u00ader looks fan\u00adtas\u00adtic for the most part. The non-lev\u00adel edi\u00adtor graph\u00adics look great and are crisp. The game runs off the Wii U graph\u00adi\u00adcal pow\u00ader so while your new\u00ader game styles and non-edi\u00adtor graph\u00adics look good on the Wii U gamepad and on the TV<\/span>, your old\u00ader graph\u00adics for most of the styles are going to look a lit\u00adtle bad at 1080p res\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion on a new\u00ader TV<\/span>. Nin\u00adten\u00addo took a risk in not jazz\u00ading up the old\u00ader game styles and it paid off, quite hon\u00adest\u00adly. I\u2019d rather play a SMB3<\/span> lev\u00adel in the way that it would have looked on the orig\u00adi\u00adnal NES<\/span> than a fixed ver\u00adsion that\u2019s been changed.
\nIn addi\u00adtion to the graph\u00adics, the sound\u00adtrack is a mix of new and old. The main themes asso\u00adci\u00adat\u00aded with each game style and lev\u00adel type (Ground, Under\u00adwa\u00adter, Under\u00adground, Cas\u00adtle, Air\u00adship and Ghost House) are remixed for use dur\u00ading the edit\u00ading process. They are found, though, in their orig\u00adi\u00adnal form when an actu\u00adal lev\u00adel is played. The remix\u00ades are great and bring some\u00adthing new to the table, while using the orig\u00adi\u00adnal ver\u00adsion does a lot for immer\u00adsion. The game\u2019s illu\u00adsions to spir\u00adi\u00adtu\u00adal pre\u00adde\u00adces\u00adsor Mario Paint don\u2019t hurt, either. It, too, had a unique sound\u00adtrack and hear\u00adken\u00ading back to that era of cre\u00adativ\u00adi\u00adty in sev\u00ader\u00adal places such as the sound\u00adtrack is a  wel\u00adcome inclusion.
\nWhat I love most about Mario Mak\u00ader is its sense of Mario love. It\u2019s not afraid to let the gamer take con\u00adtrol and it\u2019s also about Nin\u00adten\u00addo let\u00adting folks in to see the wheels turn behind one of its most icon\u00adic fran\u00adchis\u00ades. Nin\u00adten\u00addo clear\u00adly loves Mario, whether it\u2019s from a mon\u00ade\u00adti\u00adza\u00adtion point of tak\u00ading its inter\u00adnal lev\u00adel edi\u00adtor and turn\u00ading it loose on the pop\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion, or from the stand\u00adpoint that Mario is Nin\u00adten\u00addo and he\u2019s been giv\u00aden the roy\u00adal treat\u00adment for a job well done for the past 30 years. Super Mario Mak\u00ader is the company\u2019s love let\u00adter to Mario fans and well done let\u00adter at that.<\/p>\n
