SSX<\/span> can get a lit\u00adtle \u2026 well \u2026 Tricky. OK<\/span>, yes, I went for the easy joke, but it\u2019s one that can be made with a sol\u00adid title in SSX<\/span> Tricky. Tricky tends to take the best things about the SSX<\/span> fran\u00adchise and make them bet\u00adter. And that\u2019s bet\u00adter for every\u00adone because snow\u00adboard\u00ading games of the time weren\u2019t exact\u00adly fresh\u00adly pow\u00addered experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tricky set\u00adtles into its role as a snow\u00adboard\u00ading sim\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtor with slick visu\u00adals and an added bonus of inter\u00adest\u00ading char\u00adac\u00adters. The eas\u00adi\u00adest way to describe play\u00ading Tricky is that it\u2019s you ver\u00adsus the moun\u00adtain, and well, some\u00adtimes you ver\u00adsus the oth\u00ader char\u00adac\u00adters ver\u00adsus the moun\u00adtain. While the World Cir\u00adcuit mode is tout\u00aded as a main attrac\u00adtion \u2014 and it is cer\u00adtain\u00adly is for sev\u00ader\u00adal rea\u00adsons \u2014 the mode that does the most for me is Free Ride. There\u2019s noth\u00ading quite like run\u00adning down the tracks and pulling off tricks with\u00adout oth\u00ader char\u00adac\u00adters to annoy you. The char\u00adac\u00adters aren\u2019t real\u00adly that annoy\u00ading, and the rival\u00adry sys\u00adtem is fun, but I pre\u00adferred my soli\u00adtude while learn\u00ading the game and Prac\u00adtice and Free Ride pro\u00advid\u00aded that easily.<\/span><\/p>\n

Those slick visu\u00adals are also on dis\u00adplay through\u00adout the dif\u00adfer\u00adent modes, and it imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly sets the game apart from its com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adtion of the time. The game flat-out looks great on the Game\u00adCube, and the oth\u00ader con\u00adsole ver\u00adsions looked great, too. The Game\u00adCube ver\u00adsion has an inter\u00adest\u00ading con\u00adtrol scheme that lends itself to rolling down the slopes, and it\u2019s intu\u00aditive and becomes sec\u00adond nature as you become more com\u00adfort\u00adable pulling off var\u00adi\u00adous tricks. For that increas\u00ading lev\u00adel of com\u00adfort, you are reward\u00aded with big\u00adger and bet\u00adter items that should help you improve as well as make you look a lit\u00adtle bet\u00adter on the track. It\u2019s that dri\u00adve to unlock these good\u00adies and tracks that keeps you com\u00ading back to Tricky.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s all along\u00adside the sound\u00adtrack, which is excel\u00adlent, too. There are a few vocal pieces with the instru\u00admen\u00adtal tracks for the dif\u00adfer\u00adent lev\u00adels, and all are appro\u00adpri\u00adate for the atmos\u00adphere EA<\/span> wants to con\u00advey. In par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar, the remix of Run DMC<\/span>\u2019s mas\u00adsive hit \u201cTricky\u201d is the high\u00adlight \u2014 as it should be. If it\u2019s the main theme of the game, it should stand out, which it man\u00adages to do so. It nev\u00ader gets old to hear the trio\u2019s 1986 hit sam\u00adpled and remixed (editor\u2019s note: \u201980s rap nev\u00ader gets old, in any sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion<\/em>) while throw\u00ading down mas\u00adsive tricks on a treach\u00ader\u00adous moun\u00adtain. And, believe it or not, the voice act\u00ading adds to the game as well. Usu\u00adal\u00adly, a ful\u00adly famous all-star cast of voice actors pro\u00adduces mixed results. How\u00adev\u00ader, Tricky is an excep\u00adtion to that rule. Folks like Lucy Liu, Oliv\u00ader Platt, Patri\u00adcia Velasquez and Bil\u00adly Zane deliv\u00ader sol\u00adid results.<\/span><\/p>\n

With three oth\u00ader sequels and a reboot in 2012, Tricky has had the chal\u00adlenge of stand\u00ading out in a crowd\u00aded library of titles fea\u00adtur\u00ading snow\u00adboard\u00ading. But it\u2019s not that hard to do when it\u2019s got good mechan\u00adics and great atmos\u00adphere, a rather tricky feat to accomplish.<\/span><\/p>\n
