NBA<\/span> Jam was \u2014 and still is \u2014 an expe\u00adri\u00adence. No, that\u2019s not some pre\u00adpos\u00adter\u00adous fluff dreamed up by an Nation\u00adal Bas\u00adket\u00adball Asso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion maven like yours tru\u00adly. It was tru\u00adly an expe\u00adri\u00adence because if you were around at the time that Jam hit the streets, you\u2019d remem\u00adber the sheer amount of hype that sur\u00adround\u00aded the arcade release. You\u2019d also remem\u00adber the hype that came home with it. Was it jus\u00adti\u00adfied hype? Yes and no.<\/span><\/p>\n

You see, Jam rep\u00adre\u00adsent\u00aded the start of the exag\u00adger\u00adat\u00aded sports game era, the type of game where the play\u00ader ani\u00adma\u00adtions were over the top and the action just as extreme. Throw in a pletho\u00adra of secrets \u2014 like play\u00ading as Pres\u00adi\u00addent Bill Clin\u00adton \u2014 and the hype went into over\u00addrive. The game isn\u2019t bad and it most\u00adly lived up to its billing. The sim\u00adple set\u00adup of two-on-two bas\u00adket\u00adball and fast-break bas\u00adket\u00adball helped cer\u00adtain\u00adly, and the ani\u00adma\u00adtion isn\u2019t bad at all. The play\u00ader inter\u00adac\u00adtion is where it most\u00adly suc\u00adceeds, actu\u00adal\u00adly. At the time,<\/span><\/p>\n

there was no oth\u00ader place to get the kind of play that Jam offers: Crazy dunks, the abil\u00adi\u00adty to be on fire from great shoot\u00ading and street ball-type rules. It\u2019s that offer\u00ading that made it a phe\u00adnom\u00ade\u00adnal success.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jam does\u00adn\u2019t stum\u00adble in its race to be an in-your-face baller expe\u00adri\u00adence. That street ball play\u00ader inter\u00adac\u00adtion means you don\u2019t have to learn much about the game to suc\u00adceed and play well. The con\u00adtrol is sim\u00adple yet has a lay\u00ader of depth that means any\u00adone can do well at any skill lev\u00adel. The atmos\u00adphere could be a lit\u00adtle bet\u00adter with a bet\u00adter sound\u00adtrack, but what will make you take notice is the announc\u00ader. If there\u2019s any\u00adthing you will remem\u00adber about the game, it\u2019s Tim Kitzrow shout\u00ading to the top of his lungs that a man is \u201con fire\u201d or \u201cBOOMSHAKALAKA<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The graph\u00adics, like the sound\u00adtrack, are noth\u00ading to get excit\u00aded about. There\u2019s a sta\u00adt\u00adic crowd except for the court\u00adside folk, and then there\u2019s the play\u00aders. Jam pop\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adized the over-exag\u00adger\u00adat\u00aded look for play\u00aders, and it cer\u00adtain\u00adly had its uses. It\u2019s not out of place for Jam, and it brings a cer\u00adtain atmos\u00adphere to the action that Jam ben\u00ade\u00adfits from.<\/span><\/p>\n

If there\u2019s ever a rea\u00adson to play NBA<\/span> Jam, find it in the car\u00adtoon\u00adish action, sound and look.
