They were expect\u00aded to be an exact copy of the arcade ver\u00adsion they were borne from, they need\u00aded to play just as well as their arcade par\u00adents, and they need\u00aded to set up the next arcade ver\u00adsion. The Samu\u00adrai Shodown series was no stranger to these expec\u00adta\u00adtions. And it could rea\u00adson\u00adably meet them with the Neo Geo arcade sys\u00adtem. But the debut 16-bit ver\u00adsion of the beloved Sam Sho is a dif\u00adfer\u00adent tale of the&nbsp;tape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Samu\u00adrai Shodown tells the sto\u00adry of revenge wrought by the res\u00adur\u00adrect\u00aded Amakusa in 1787 and 1788 as he sought to avenge his exe\u00adcu\u00adtion by the Shogu\u00adnate in 1638. Amakusa made a deal with the demon lord Ambrosia and drew oth\u00ader fight\u00aders to him. Now-famil\u00adiar faces dot the cast: Naoko\u00adru\u00adru and Haohmaru (from Cap\u00adcom vs. <span class=\"caps\">SNK<\/span> fame), Gal\u00adford, Char\u00adlotte, Earth\u00adquake, and Jubei. It\u2019s a fight\u00ading game with an inter\u00adest\u00ading cast and sto\u00adry based on a few real fig\u00adures in his\u00adto\u00adry, so it\u2019s bound to draw interest.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">How\u00adev\u00ader, what should real\u00adly send you is the pre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion. Samu\u00adrai Shodown \u2014 as not\u00aded in our review of the 2019 remake (<em><strong>Edi\u00adtor\u2019s note: See <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gaminginsurrection.com\/archives\/ISSUE39.pdf\">Issue 39<\/a> for the review<\/strong><\/em>) \u2014 is one of the most beau\u00adti\u00adful fight\u00ading game series ever cre\u00adat\u00aded. And while we ini\u00adtial\u00adly heaped that praise on the mod\u00adern ver\u00adsion, it also extends to the retro ver\u00adsion as well. Begin\u00adning with the intro\u00adduc\u00adto\u00adry screen, Samu\u00adrai Shodown does not dis\u00adap\u00adpoint in the visu\u00adals. The lush, beau\u00adti\u00adful graph\u00adics go a long way in set\u00adting the scene of the vio\u00adlence and beau\u00adty of the Edo peri\u00adod of Japan\u00adese his\u00adto\u00adry. Sim\u00adi\u00adlar\u00adly, the sound\u00adtrack does\u00adn\u2019t dis\u00adap\u00adpoint, either. Every\u00adthing about the pre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion is invit\u00ading if you\u2019re into this sort of thing; spoil\u00ader alert, I am, which should be obvi\u00adous by now with\u00adin the con\u00adtext of Gam\u00ading Insur\u00adrec\u00adtion. Retro Samu\u00adrai Shodown is noto\u00adri\u00adous\u00adly hard to nav\u00adi\u00adgate, and that\u2019s on full dis\u00adplay here. Some\u00adtimes I could get moves off clean\u00adly; some\u00adtimes I strug\u00adgled just to get a com\u00admon pro\u00adjec\u00adtile motion to work. It\u2019s easy to pick up, but there is strug\u00adgle, and it\u2019s worth con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00ading if you can tol\u00ader\u00adate that enough to <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-589\" src=\"http:\/\/gaminginsurrection.com\/reviews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Score-3-retrograde.jpg\" alt width=\"90\" height=\"148\">con\u00adtin\u00adue through the game. Also, real\u00adize now that in Arcade Mode, you\u2019re going to fight every\u00adone in the cast. There is no \u201clet\u2019s select six to eight oppo\u00adnents from this very full cast;\u201d no, you\u2019re fight\u00ading every\u00adone before you even sniff Amakusa so you will get lots of prac\u00adtice with those hard movesets. How\u00adev\u00ader, it is bro\u00adken up with pro\u00adgres\u00adsive\u00adly hard\u00ader mini games, so this isn\u2019t unfa\u00admil\u00adiar ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adry. The Count\u00addown Mode, a sort of ear\u00adly sur\u00advival mode, is a decent chal\u00adlenge that also gets pro\u00adgres\u00adsive\u00adly hard\u00ader. There is replay val\u00adue there, so that adds to the charm of an oth\u00ader\u00adwise bare\u00adbones&nbsp;game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">If you can move past the so hard it\u2019s a good hurt men\u00adtal\u00adi\u00adty of the orig\u00adi\u00adnal Samu\u00adrai Shodown, there is a crown jew\u00adel wait\u00ading to be played and dis\u00adsect\u00aded. The death poem that is the dif\u00adfi\u00adcul\u00adty and con\u00adtrols in con\u00adcert may be a detrac\u00adtion but know that it remains beau\u00adti\u00adful lat\u00ader down the fight\u00ading game road with improve\u00adments.
