Lat\u00adest, great\u00adest adventure<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Goe\u00admon\u2019s Great Adven\u00adture has always had the unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate posi\u00adtion in gam\u00ading of com\u00ading after the excel\u00adlent Mys\u00adti\u00adcal Nin\u00adja Star\u00adring Goe\u00admon. It can\u2019t help but fol\u00adlow in the shad\u00adow of the game as its direct sequel, and it\u2019s nev\u00ader going to stand up to make itself the pre\u00admier entry in the series. What it does have going for it though are two things: Rar\u00adi\u00adty and some improve\u00adments in areas where the oth\u00ader entries struggled.<\/span><\/p>\n

Based on real-life fig\u00adure Goe\u00admon Ishikawa, the tit\u00adu\u00adlar hero stays sav\u00ading the day in an alter\u00adnate Edo with his allies Ebisumaru, Yae and Sasuke. In this tale, the gang wit\u00adness\u00ades an Ebisumaru looka\u00adlike steal the Old Wise Man\u2019s new dead-res\u00adur\u00adrect\u00ading device and wreak hav\u00adoc on the land. It\u2019s a cute set\u00adup and it does\u00adn\u2019t take much to get into the sto\u00adry of the two zany nin\u00adjas. Where this entry excels is the much-improved inter\u00adface. Though it seems less per\u00adson\u00adal and plot\u00adted out like Super Mario World with a world map, it\u2019s a wel\u00adcome relief from the some\u00adtimes-con\u00adfus\u00ading lay\u00adout of Mys\u00adti\u00adcal Nin\u00adja Star\u00adring Goe\u00admon. It\u2019s nice to just choose a loca\u00adtion on the map and go there with\u00adout hav\u00ading to remem\u00adber how to get there.<\/span><\/p>\n

Also improved are the mechan\u00adics. The biggest change in the game is arguably the switch from over-the-shoul\u00adder view la Mario 64 back to a side-scroller in the vein of Leg\u00adend of the Mys\u00adti\u00adcal Nin\u00adja. Despite how jar\u00adring it may have seemed at first, even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly I came to love the fact that it\u2019s slight\u00adly eas\u00adi\u00ader to move around and get a feel for the char\u00adac\u00adters than it was in Star\u00adring Goe\u00admon. Move\u00adment seems more sub\u00adstan\u00adtial and there\u2019s no more fight\u00ading with the wonky cam\u00adera that won\u2019t cooperate. <\/span><\/p>\n

The way it looks is bet\u00adter also in Great Adven\u00adture. Every\u00adthing is cleaned up and less polyg\u00ado\u00adnal, though some char\u00adac\u00adters retain that blocky look no mat\u00adter what. How\u00adev\u00ader, the glow up is most notice\u00adable in the envi\u00adron\u00adment. Edo looks fan\u00adtas\u00adtic, with the beau\u00adti\u00adful recre\u00adation of feu\u00addal Japan\u00adese archi\u00adtec\u00adture stand\u00ading out the most. I was always impressed with the Mys\u00adti\u00adcal Nin\u00adja series in what it tried to do graph\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly, and this is a sol\u00adid-look\u00ading entry.<\/span><\/p>\n

Just as good as the graph\u00adics is the sound. Mys\u00adti\u00adcal Nin\u00adja, as a series, is known for its sub\u00adlime sound\u00adtrack and Great Adven\u00adture does\u00adn\u2019t dis\u00adap\u00adpoint. We\u2019ve cov\u00adered this in our review of the game\u2019s tracks (Edi\u00adtor\u2019s Note: See Issue 39<\/a><\/strong><\/em>) for Beat.Trip.Game, and it\u2019s so good it\u2019s worth men\u00adtion\u00ading mul\u00adti\u00adple times. <\/span><\/p>\n

Though it\u2019s an improve\u00adment in most areas, there are some spots where it could be pol\u00adished a lit\u00adtle more. Some of the trans\u00adla\u00adtion is rough and there are fre\u00adquent gram\u00admar errors in the text. For a game that relies on text to get the point across, that\u2019s too jar\u00adring and takes me out of the expe\u00adri\u00adence. Anoth\u00ader gripe is that, while most of the mechan\u00adics are improved, some of the new mechan\u00adics \u2014 such as the pole vault \u2014 need some work. It\u2019s not hard to do \u2014 once you fig\u00adure it out. The prob\u00adlem is that it takes much too long to fig\u00adure out. If I have to watch a playthrough video to get the con\u00adcept, it\u2019s doing too much.<\/span>
\nGoe\u00admon\u2019s Great Adven\u00adture is a tech\u00adni\u00adcal\u00adly sound and com\u00adpe\u00adtent entry in a much-loved series. Despite my ini\u00adtial annoy\u00adance with it 25 years ago, it\u2019s grown on me with anoth\u00ader replay. While it\u2019s not as great as the stel\u00adlar Mys\u00adti\u00adcal Nin\u00adja Star\u00adring Goe\u00admon, it\u2019s defin\u00adi\u00adtive\u00adly a wel\u00adcome entry in the series. One thing we\u2019re going to do is let Goe\u00admon be great, and he achieves it with this sol\u00adid entry in the franchise.<\/span><\/p>\n
