Stomp\u00ading step stone<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

New Super Mario Bros. DS<\/span> a good tri\u00adal run<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Now, y\u2019all know I love me some Mario. I\u2019m a Mario girl and have been for a long time. A whole issue devot\u00aded to him and his exploits aside, there are few main\u00adline Mario games that I haven\u2019t played and enjoyed. As a con\u00adnois\u00adseur on all things Mario, his leap to 3D<\/span> was not one of my favorite things to expe\u00adri\u00adence because of the sur\u00adprise con\u00addi\u00adtion of motion sick\u00adness. So, imag\u00adine my hap\u00adpi\u00adness when the series took the side\u00adstep to start pro\u00adduc\u00ading 2D<\/span> games again. Nin\u00adten\u00addo\u2019s first entry, New Super Mario Bros., was a warm-up if not a prac\u00adtice ses\u00adsion for some\u00adthing greater.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sto\u00adry starts pleas\u00adant\u00adly enough with Bows\u00ader kid\u00adnap\u00adping Princess Peach for the mil\u00adlionth time. It\u2019s stan\u00addard fare for Mario games at this point and it\u2019s ser\u00advice\u00adable enough because that\u2019s what you\u2019re sup\u00adposed to do in Mario games: save the princess. But there\u2019s some\u00adthing dif\u00adfer\u00adent here: a new\u00ader style of graph\u00adics and play mechan\u00adics to whet your appetite for that \u201cnew\u201d in the title. The game looks clean\u00ader and brighter as com\u00adpared to the last 2D<\/span> out\u00ading \u2014 Super Mario World for the SNES<\/span> \u2014 and Mario is more defined. Yes, you\u2019re still in the Mush\u00adroom King\u00addom but it looks new\u00ader. The way you play is also new. Mar\u00adi\u00ado\u2019s get\u00adting around a lot bet\u00adter in mod\u00adern times and it start\u00aded here with a new butt stomp, wall jump, triple jump and new pow\u00ader-ups in the Mini Mush\u00adroom, Mega Mush\u00adroom and the Blue Koopa Shell. These pow\u00ader-ups are wel\u00adcome addi\u00adtions to the Mario reper\u00adtoire and are fun to use.<\/span><\/p>\n

My main gripe comes from the new mechan\u00adics, how\u00adev\u00ader. While I love that Mario moves well, some\u00adtimes he moves almost too well. I had the same issue here as I did with the lat\u00ader Wii ver\u00adsion: Mario slides around entire\u00adly too much. I have to keep in the back of my mind to under\u00adcom\u00adpen\u00adsate and over\u00adcor\u00adrect with run\u00adning and jump\u00ading move\u00adments con\u00adstant\u00adly, and it\u2019s a bit much to keep up with while try\u00ading to play well. When I want Mario to stop run\u00adning, it should be instant\u00adly. There should\u00adn\u2019t be extra frames of stop\u00adping. Also, some of the jumps don\u2019t feel as clean as they should if we\u2019re bas\u00ading it on the known Mario stan\u00addard. It\u2019s all a lit\u00adtle too loosey-goosey for my lik\u00ading and makes clean play a lit\u00adtle bit more of a chore than I\u2019d care to do. Lat\u00ader entries have cleaned this up, but it\u2019s obvi\u00adous here and I can cut it some slack because it has been fixed. Just know that it\u2019s part of the \u201cnew\u201d experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

New Super Mario Bros. has the Mario charm the series is known for as well. It\u2019s fun to play and dis\u00adcov\u00ader new secrets and see the new con\u00adcepts work out in a series that puts in the work to inno\u00advate and stay rel\u00ade\u00advant. This first game was the step\u00adping stone for the phe\u00adnom\u00ade\u00adnal New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and you can clear\u00adly see where it\u2019s going in terms of the total pack\u00adage. It\u2019s not an insult to say this was the prac\u00adtice run and that prac\u00adtice makes per\u00adfect, espe\u00adcial\u00adly if you\u2019re New Super Mario Bros., and you\u2019re com\u00adpared to oth\u00ader main\u00adline Mario games, and you sell 30 mil\u00adlion copies as the best-sell\u00ading DS<\/span> game of all-time. Clear\u00adly, this is a mega Mario hit and good start\u00ading point for the 2D<\/span> throw\u00adback of the franchise.<\/span><\/p>\n
