Bub\u00adble Bob\u00adble Part Deux<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Bust-A-Move gets down again in sequel<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Long ago, bub\u00adble pop\u00adping took hold of my inter\u00adest, right about the time I start\u00aded get\u00adting hair on my chest and some sense acquired when it came to good qual\u00adi\u00adty video games. And would\u00adn\u2019t you know it, my late great mama \u2014 the dear\u00adly depart\u00aded GI<\/span> Mama \u2014 also divined that she was a fan of the bub\u00adble-pop\u00adping non\u00adsense that I\u2019d brought home for my Super Nin\u00adten\u00addo. Alas, my tastes had to grow so we looked for more bub\u00adble-pop\u00adping non\u00adsense and found there was a sequel or two to the mad\u00adness. What apro\u00adpos popped up was Bust-A-Move 2.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, let\u2019s not get it twist\u00aded: This is the same old Bust-A-Move you\u2019re used to play\u00ading if bust\u00ading bub\u00adbles is your thing. Noth\u00ading is dras\u00adti\u00adcal\u00adly dif\u00adfer\u00adent than the for\u00admu\u00adla estab\u00adlished in the orig\u00adi\u00adnal game: You pop clus\u00adters of like-col\u00adored bub\u00adbles in an effort to clear estab\u00adlished puz\u00adzles. This basic premise was set up in the first game for the SNES<\/span> and it has\u00adn\u2019t changed, no mat\u00adter the iter\u00ada\u00adtion. But what has changed some\u00adwhat is the pre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion. In this ver\u00adsion, there is an illu\u00admi\u00adnat\u00aded map puz\u00adzle path that your char\u00adac\u00adter can choose, and deci\u00adsions have to be made to get to the end puz\u00adzle. The deci\u00adsion to include a vis\u00adi\u00adble path struc\u00adture is a nice step for\u00adward, but still needs some pay\u00adoff to be a gamechanger. <\/span><\/p>\n

Slight\u00adly dif\u00adfer\u00adent yet famil\u00adiar are the graph\u00adics. Bust-A-Move 2 has\u00adn\u2019t real\u00adly changed all that much in the looks depart\u00adment. There are some new graph\u00adics for the back\u00adgrounds dur\u00ading puz\u00adzles, the char\u00adac\u00adters are more defined and the bub\u00adbles them\u00adselves are more crisp and deep\u00ader hued to pop but that\u2019s about it. It looks OK<\/span> for an N64<\/span> puz\u00adzle game, but there are oth\u00aders out there doing a lot more with the same con\u00adsole resources, such as Mag\u00adi\u00adcal Tetris Challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sound\u00adtrack is a lit\u00adtle more bub\u00adbly than the orig\u00adi\u00adnal but has a lit\u00adtle less charm than the first game. The songs are slight\u00adly catchy, but not near\u00adly as mem\u00ado\u00adrable as the first game\u2019s 16-bit organ-inspired schtick. How\u00adev\u00ader, what you\u2019ll real\u00adly notice that\u2019s dif\u00adfer\u00adent is the addi\u00adtion of voic\u00ades. Now, your char\u00adac\u00adter and the oppo\u00adnents make a lit\u00adtle noise when they achieve a com\u00adbo. It\u2019s cute, even with the shrill squawk\u00ading that shows up in the menu.<\/span><\/p>\n

But let\u2019s be hon\u00adest, what you came here for was to learn if the puz\u00adzle game\u00adplay is up to the stan\u00addard estab\u00adlished by the first game. Yes, it is, and here\u2019s why: Not much changed. No crazy weird mechan\u00adics shoe\u00adhorned in, no mis\u00adsteps in how the bub\u00adbles bank or strange con\u00adcepts cob\u00adbled togeth\u00ader (aside from the sticky plat\u00adforms that inex\u00adplic\u00ada\u00adbly start show\u00ading up halfway through the sto\u00adry mode) make appear\u00adances here. You can be rest assured that it\u2019s the Bust-A-Move that we all know and love.<\/span><\/p>\n

My beloved late GI<\/span> Mama once declared Bust-A-Move a cheat\u00ading game while I was mol\u00adly whop\u00adping her in a ver\u00adsus mode run. She said she\u2019d see me in the sequel. Well, the sequel here is just enough jus\u00adti\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion to wait for that rematch in heav\u00aden when my time comes. It\u2019s noth\u00ading new but then again, some\u00adtimes stick\u00ading with the estab\u00adlish\u00adment is the best idea when it comes to bub\u00adbles part deux.<\/span><\/p>\n
