Cap\u00adcom tends to tread a lot of the same ground these days. Whether it\u2019s \u201cget\u00adting back to their roots\u201d with Street Fight\u00ader\u2019s mod\u00adern ver\u00adsions or return\u00ading to the past with a lot of upgrad\u00aded col\u00adlec\u00adtions, Cap\u00adcom sure has a way of remind\u00ading you that, yes, they made Street Fight\u00ader and a bunch of oth\u00ader fight\u00ading games. The ques\u00adtion is do we care? Yes and no, if this cur\u00adrent col\u00adlec\u00adtion is to be judged.<\/span><\/p>\n

I will admit that, despite being a strict Mor\u00adtal Kom\u00adbat old head, I am inclined to speak up about my favorite genre in fight\u00ading games and how it relates to Cap\u00adcom. This col\u00adlec\u00adtion, filled to the brim with noth\u00ading but Cap\u00adcom fight\u00aders, aims to show that Cap\u00adcom had some hits and mem\u00ado\u00adrable prop\u00ader\u00adties. Fight\u00ading Col\u00adlec\u00adtion fea\u00adtures 10 entries: Vampire\/Darkstalkers 1\u20133, Vam\u00adpire Hunter 2, Vam\u00adpire Sav\u00adior 2, Cyber\u00adbots: Full Met\u00adal Mad\u00adness, WarZard\/Red Earth, Hyper Street Fight\u00ader II<\/span>: The Anniver\u00adsary Edi\u00adtion, Super Gem Fight\u00ader Mini Mix\/Pocket Fight\u00ader and Super Puz\u00adzle Fight\u00ader II<\/span> Tur\u00adbo, with the North Amer\u00adi\u00adcan or Japan\u00adese ver\u00adsions avail\u00adable for play. In all cas\u00ades, these are arcade rom ver\u00adsions gath\u00adered togeth\u00ader in one spot and you can freely switch between them on free play. Col\u00adlec\u00adtion-wise, this is a top-tier pack\u00adage for those who love fight\u00ading games made by Cap\u00adcom. Main\u00adstream mon\u00adey mak\u00ader that\u2019s still around today? That\u2019s Hyper Street Fight\u00ader II<\/span>. Obscure weird fight\u00ader that no one even knows that Cap\u00adcom made it? Take your pick from Cyber\u00adbots and WarZard. Cutesy, chibi fight\u00ader that unabashed\u00adly mocks its mak\u00ader? Puz\u00adzle Fight\u00ader and Pock\u00adet Fight\u00ader have that on lock. Defunct series that should still be a thing, but Cap\u00adcom does\u00adn\u2019t pay atten\u00adtion? All of the Vam\u00adpire you can pos\u00adsi\u00adbly shake a stick at sat\u00adis\u00adfies that require\u00adment. There is lit\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly some\u00adthing for every\u00adone here. But the ques\u00adtion is, do you want it, espe\u00adcial\u00adly now that you know what\u2019s avail\u00adable here? As ear\u00adli\u00ader, yes and no.<\/span><\/p>\n

While the pre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion is top-notch, the actu\u00adal assort\u00adment of the games involved is a mixed bag. Gen\u00adtle read\u00aders, I just com\u00adpiled and cre\u00adat\u00aded an entire issue devot\u00aded to Vam\u00adpire (Edi\u00adtor\u2019s note: That\u2019d be Issue 46. Go down\u00adload it now if you haven\u2019t.) and its inner work\u00adings and the his\u00adto\u00adry behind the series. Know\u00ading that, please explain to me why I have Vam\u00adpire burnout and why I had it before I did that issue because of this col\u00adlec\u00adtion. Cap\u00adcom does this song and dance every sin\u00adgle time Vam\u00adpire is whis\u00adpered some\u00adwhere by some unsus\u00adpect\u00ading gamer who loves the series and wants to see it once more have its day in the sun. I wrote an entire col\u00adumn in that pre\u00advi\u00adous issue dis\u00adcussing the need for a Vam\u00adpire revival \u2014 a new game, not an old rehash \u2014 and how we were nev\u00ader going to get that because Cap\u00adcom does the series dirty constantly. <\/span><\/p>\n

Well, would\u00adn\u2019t you know it, Cap\u00adcom pulled a skunk out of their hat by includ\u00ading all of the Vam\u00adpire games here. It\u2019s like they said, \u201cWell, you asked for more Vam\u00adpire. Here, be sat\u00adis\u00adfied that we released all of them final\u00adly in North Amer\u00adi\u00adca and shut up.\u201d You know, I\u2019m slight\u00adly hap\u00adpy but I\u2019m more offend\u00aded than any\u00adthing else. Because, as you should have read by now gen\u00adtle read\u00ader, Cap\u00adcom is nev\u00ader going to give us a new Vam\u00adpire game with\u00adout there being some weird\u00adness attached. And because this col\u00adlec\u00adtion sold \u201cOK<\/span>,\u201d \u2014 not great, just OK<\/span> \u2014 you know we aren\u2019t get\u00adting a new game. Because it did\u00adn\u2019t set the world on fire in sales does\u00adn\u2019t mean the demand isn\u2019t there. But I digress. Every\u00adthing else in this col\u00adlec\u00adtion has been released in some way, shape or form in either region, so it was\u00adn\u2019t nec\u00ades\u00adsary for their inclu\u00adsion, either. <\/span><\/p>\n

What I would have pre\u00adferred to see are Rival Schools, Project Jus\u00adtice, Star Glad\u00adi\u00ada\u00adtor and Plas\u00adma Sword. These are defunct Cap\u00adcom series that they also like to act like they did\u00adn\u2019t cre\u00adate. Rival Schools and Project Jus\u00adtice are espe\u00adcial\u00adly egre\u00adgious because while they\u2019ve been port\u00aded to PlaySta\u00adtion Net\u00adwork, we haven\u2019t got\u00adten a full, unal\u00adtered port of either game. A mod\u00adern trans\u00adla\u00adtion of the board game and sim\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion mode in both games is not that hard, but I digress again because we know we are nev\u00ader get\u00adting it. It\u2019s a shame because this col\u00adlec\u00adtion as pulled togeth\u00ader in 2022 could have used some bet\u00adter curation.<\/span><\/p>\n

While I love Cap\u00adcom fight\u00ading games, I\u2019m OK<\/span> about this col\u00adlec\u00adtion. It\u2019s nice to have these in a mod\u00adern pack\u00adage for mod\u00adern con\u00adsoles but I\u2019m not enthused about the behind-the-scenes fool\u00adish\u00adness that could have been avoid\u00aded with bet\u00adter curat\u00ading on Cap\u00adcom\u2019s part. There are some heavy hit\u00adters that could have been includ\u00aded imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly that would have made it a bet\u00adter pack\u00adage, and the extras includ\u00aded could have been bet\u00adter also. How\u00adev\u00ader, it\u2019s not a ter\u00adri\u00adble pack\u00adage and is infi\u00adnite\u00adly use\u00adful and valu\u00adable to the fight\u00ading game pop\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion so it\u2019s not a total wash. Cap\u00adcom could col\u00adlect bet\u00adter, though.<\/span><\/p>\n
