A peachy keen adventure<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Usu\u00adal\u00adly, for us die-hard Mario enthu\u00adsi\u00adasts, sav\u00ading Princess Peach is the name of the game when it comes to an adven\u00adture. After all, we start\u00aded way back when with Pauline in Don\u00adkey Kong and moved up to Mush\u00adroom King\u00addom clean up in Super Mario Bros. But occa\u00adsion\u00adal\u00adly, the script gets flipped and it\u2019s about sav\u00ading Mario instead. Super Princess Peach does just that and does a damn fine, if not stereo\u00adtyp\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly emo\u00adtion-filled, job.<\/span>
\nStart\u00ading things off with busi\u00adness as usu\u00adal, Bows\u00ader invades the Mush\u00adroom King\u00addom in a bid to steal Peach and wreak hav\u00adoc. He suc\u00adceeds but, chang\u00ading things up, man\u00adages to cap\u00adture Mario and Lui\u00adgi instead and cre\u00adate chaos with the Vibe Scepter, which con\u00adtrols oth\u00ader beings\u2019 emo\u00adtions. Instead of hop\u00ading for a hero, Peach decides she must return the favor and sets out across eight worlds set on Vibe Island to save her plumber beau and his brother. <\/span>
\nIn her quest, Peach is assist\u00aded by a sen\u00adtient umbrel\u00adla named Per\u00adry. Per\u00adry imbues Peach with Vibe meter by defeat\u00ading ene\u00admies and pro\u00advides oth\u00ader tech\u00adniques for her arse\u00adnal. And Vibe meter is real\u00adly the oth\u00ader big mechan\u00adic here. On the DS<\/span>\u2019 bot\u00adtom screen, there are four emo\u00adtions that Peach uti\u00adlizes to solve puz\u00adzles: Joy, Rage, Gloom and Calm. The emo\u00adtions are inno\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive and easy to use, mak\u00ading con\u00adtrol\u00adling Peach a breeze. Rarely are the touch\u00adscreen con\u00adtrols an issue, and it\u2019s easy to quick\u00adly switch among them on the fly.<\/span>
\nGraph\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly, Super Princess Peach is cute and vibrant, which plays well for the vibe Nin\u00adten\u00addo is going for here. I expect\u00aded that Vibe Island would look bright and col\u00ador\u00adful in most places and has a light, airy feel to it. The back\u00adgrounds pop and the char\u00adac\u00adter sprites are cute and weird in a good way. It car\u00adries the nor\u00admal Mario charm, but there\u2019s some\u00adthing about run\u00adning around as Peach with the adorable Per\u00adry that looks and feels gen\u00aduine\u00adly refresh\u00ading. The sound\u00adtrack is also some\u00adthing spe\u00adcial. It has a groovy vibe to it, and all the tracks work well with the sur\u00adround\u00adings. Also, Peach\u2019s voice act\u00ading is spot-on. Peach sounds exact\u00adly like what I would expect in mod\u00adern games, and I par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly enjoyed the sound effects for the dif\u00adfer\u00adent emo\u00adtions she employs.<\/span>
\nMy only bone of con\u00adtention is small but a big part of the game: The Vibe meter. While a nice mechan\u00adic as far as game\u00adplay goes, there was some\u00adthing about it that both\u00adered me that I could\u00adn\u2019t artic\u00adu\u00adlate when the game was released in 2006, but I can now. I\u2019m not over\u00adly fond of the con\u00adcept that Peach is led around by manip\u00adu\u00adlat\u00ading her emo\u00adtions. It\u2019s the con\u00adcept that women are emo\u00adtion-dri\u00adven crea\u00adtures that jumps out at me as a lit\u00adtle more than offen\u00adsive. If we\u2019re capa\u00adble of sav\u00ading our beau \u2014 which we whol\u00adly are, and it only took from 1985 to 2006 to show this \u2014 then we can do it with\u00adout it implied that we\u2019re wild\u00adly mood-swing\u00ading weirdos who are gid\u00addy at one moment and rag\u00ading or cry\u00ading at the next. It\u2019s a lit\u00adtle more than stereo\u00adtyp\u00adi\u00adcal misog\u00ady\u00adnis\u00adtic non\u00adsense that quite frankly was\u00adn\u2019t nec\u00ades\u00adsary to attach to an already damsel-in-dis\u00adtress arche\u00adtype try\u00ading to change the sta\u00adtus quo. The game, on its tech\u00adni\u00adcal mer\u00adits, is strong enough to stand on its own, honestly.<\/span>
\nDespite some wonky ideas about Peach\u2019s emo\u00adtion\u00adal sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty and for\u00adti\u00adtude, Super Princess Peach is a quaint and fun adven\u00adture. It\u2019s not a game-chang\u00ader in the Mario pan\u00adtheon but it\u2019s easy, acces\u00adsi\u00adble, and adorable. I can\u2019t ask for more out of my hop \u2018n\u2019 bop done right. It\u2019s just peachy.<\/span><\/p>\n
