While it’s not a flawless game by any stretch of the imagination, it has longevity and a strong lineage to keep it afloat in the MK universe, even with siblings nipping at its heels.

MK Mobile is simple: It takes teams of three characters from the established MK roster and pits them against other teams in various modes. Character cards in the four categories – Diamond, Gold, Silver, and Bronze – are easy to acquire whether you’re going the free-to-play route or want a whale paid experience. Starting with the roster of Mortal Kombat XL and adding the DLC characters, Mobile began adding other characters from the MK universe at large slowly but surely. After adding a healthy dose of fighters from MK11, MK1 Scorpion (Kuai Liang) was added to link the newest main game, which is fantastic. I like seeing the synergy between games because it means someone somewhere is paying attention and trying to create a meaningful experience.

There are several modes, some static and some reoccurring that pad out the experience. Battle Mode, Quest Mode, Faction Wars, the Krypt and Shao Kahn’s Tower are the mainstays with character-specific challenges rotating through most of the base Gold characters on the roster. Themed Towers, which are 200-battle challenges with conditions similar to Kahn’s Tower, rotate every few weeks. Other events, such as Relic Hunt – where you can earn copies of Diamond Shao Kahn – and Klassic Reptile’s event, which grants fusions of his Diamond card, also rotate in and out at preset times. There’s variety in events, which is helpful when you want something to do and don’t want to wait on limited time events to reset. That reset is important because it’s how the game is designed to be played: small bursts with efficiently placed incentives to generate revenue.

And generate revenue NetherRealm will with Mobile. The purpose of Mobile is to keep the coffers filled, and RNG will rear its ugly head a lot. RNG is prevalent in every facet of the game as it is in most mobile games that have random loot chests, but it’s especially obnoxious here. Once you’re further invested, it gets harder to get the cards you need to compete unless you’re willing to spend to win. I am perpetually three cards away from a fully complete collection at all times, and it’s frustrating but it’s what I’ve come to expect from a mobile game, especially Mortal Kombat Mobile.

Mobile is competently designed and in essence is MKX in smaller phone form. The presentation has undergone changes over the years, and it’s steadily improved from its early look in 2015 when it debuted. The music is Mortal Kombat appropriate also, so there are no complaints there. I generally play with the sound off, but I’ve had it on long enough to know that it fits MKX’s aesthetic well. It also plays well enough for a mobile game, though sometimes the mini-games are frustratingly off or wildly inconsistent. But it’s no harder to play than any other mobile game so it’s not a big complaint.

Mobile has been around a long time and with the near-constant upgrades to keep it close to the most recent main game, it’s going to maintain its place in NetherRealm’s mobile portfolio alongside the newly launched Onslaught. It’s still got some charm left and it’s miles better than Injustice 2 Mobile so it’s solidly in the middle of the pack in terms of mobile Mortal Kombat offerings. And that’s where this mobile experience is in terms of quality also. With a lot of references to the series overall and plenty of things to get into, MK Mobile is still a contender in the mobile market despite a few flaws in its mantle of Elder God mobile game.

Score: 3.5 out of 5

Mayhem runs rampant in Mortal Kombat Mobile There used to be a time when a mobile Mortal Kombat game was synonymous with terrible port of a main game, but somewhere along the way, Mortal Kombat Mobile changed that association.
