Super Mario Bros. 2 an uneven, heavy-hand\u00aded sequel<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

If there were ever a time when Mario was con\u00adsid\u00adered not to be fun, this would be it. I have always had a major fas\u00adci\u00adna\u00adtion with Mario and the Mush\u00adroom King\u00addom, but the true sequel to one of the great\u00adest games of all time made me wish I didn\u2019t go down the rab\u00adbit hole.<\/span>
\nAt first glance, SMB<\/span> 2 is your typ\u00adi\u00adcal sequel: Improved graph\u00adics and new con\u00adcepts, such as the addi\u00adtion of the Poi\u00adso\u00adnous Mush\u00adroom. But there\u2019s imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly some\u00adthing off putting about the game. It\u2019s famil\u00adiar yet for\u00adeign. A lot of the same ene\u00admies are used and the game has a lot of the same sto\u00adry-spe\u00adcif\u00adic ele\u00adments as its pre\u00adde\u00adces\u00adsor. The objec\u00adtive remains the same: Save Princess Peach from the invad\u00ading Koopa army. But this is where things take sin\u00adis\u00adter and not-so-pleas\u00adant turn.<\/span>
\nI\u2019m not going to beat around the bush: The dif\u00adfi\u00adcul\u00adty lev\u00adel is not friend\u00adly. If you didn\u2019t start with Super Mario Bros., stop right now and go back and study up that game. The sequel is designed to be set up and buoyed by the orig\u00adi\u00adnal. If you start here, you\u2019re set\u00adting your\u00adself up for failure.<\/span>
\nThe new lev\u00adels were designed to take \u201csuper\u201d play\u00aders to task and show them that Mario isn\u2019t the cake\u00adwalk they thought him to be. So, born from that are Sisyphean efforts such as warps that return you to an ear\u00adli\u00ader part of the lev\u00adel; or my favorite: The fact that using lev\u00adel warps at all pre\u00advents advance\u00adment to the real end\u00ading of the game. This is Ghouls and Ghosts before Ghouls and Ghosts.<\/span>
\nThis frus\u00adtrat\u00ading tac\u00adtic of pun\u00adish\u00ading the play\u00ader for being too good is exact\u00adly why the fol\u00adlow up to Super Mario Bros. would have nev\u00ader flown in Amer\u00adi\u00adca and why we didn\u2019t see the game until a full five years after its release in Japan. Peo\u00adple tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adly play Mario to relax, not be thrown back\u00adward in a nev\u00ader-end\u00ading loop of anger and frus\u00adtra\u00adtion. This doesn\u2019t appeal to the mass play\u00aders and it\u2019s cheap and per\u00adverse that Mario is used in this way.<\/span>
\nWhile it\u2019s not the same Mario in a lot of respects, the same old charm is present. The whim\u00adsi\u00adcal jaunt through the Mush\u00adroom King\u00addom is now fraught with all types of dan\u00adger, but it\u2019s still pret\u00adty to behold. And the music is still the main act of beau\u00adty and source of joy in what is a dark skip through the for\u00adest of Mario. Some\u00adhow, through all of the anger, Koji Kondo\u2019s mas\u00adter\u00adpieces nev\u00ader seem to get old.<\/span>
\nFor the sake of your con\u00adtrollers, I sug\u00adgest invest\u00ading in cheat codes to get through SMB<\/span> 2. It\u2019s one of the few games I would ever give this advice about to beat. <\/span>
\nWe Amer\u00adi\u00adcans might be lazy and unchal\u00adlenged (editor\u2019s note: Nin\u00adten\u00addo con\u00adfirmed that this is the real rea\u00adson why we received the much-eas\u00adi\u00ader-but-still-hard SMB<\/span> 2 USA<\/span>\/Doki Doki Pan\u00adic ripoff), but at least our con\u00adtrollers remain intact and whole, no thanks in small part to get\u00adting a far eas\u00adi\u00ader ver\u00adsion of Mario 2. Super Frus\u00adtra\u00adtion Bros. would have been a more apro\u00adpos title for the sequel to the great\u00adest game of all time.<\/span><\/p>\n
