Mar\u00adi\u00ado\u2019s great\u00adest evolution <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Most of the gam\u00ading world would agree that Super Mario 64 is one of the great\u00adest games <\/span>of all time. I would agree also except for two things: First, the game gives me a tremen\u00addous headache after about 10 min\u00adutes of play; and, sec\u00adond, I\u2019m not like most people.<\/span>
\nSee, where I have a prob\u00adlem with Mario 64 is where most peo\u00adple don\u2019t have a prob\u00adlem. Don\u2019t get me wrong; I love the leap for\u00adward that presents itself as soon as you boot up the game for the first time. I was \u2014 and still am \u2014 in awe of the won\u00adder\u00adment that is see\u00ading Mario in 3D<\/span> after play\u00ading 2D<\/span> Mario games for the major\u00adi\u00adty of my gam\u00ading career. How\u00adev\u00ader, I\u2019m not in con\u00adcert with the idea that it\u2019s one of the great\u00adest games of all time. Why? Just because it was the first to ful\u00adly real\u00adize a for\u00admer\u00adly 2D<\/span> char\u00adac\u00adter in 3D<\/span> splen\u00addor? Because it\u2019s Mario and just because it\u2019s Mario? <\/span>
\nNo, I can\u2019t form my opin\u00adion or even include the game in the con\u00adver\u00adsa\u00adtion of great\u00adest game of all time just because of any of those things. <\/span>There has to be some valid rea\u00adson\u00ading and while there are some great points for it, I\u2019m not sold 100 percent.<\/span>
\nMario 64, graph\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly, is steps ahead of almost every\u00adthing for the Nin\u00adten\u00addo 64. Note that I said almost. <\/span>
\nMost games don\u2019t hold a can\u00addle to Mario in ful\u00adly real\u00adized 3D<\/span> and, even with his polyg\u00ado\u00adnal block style as with most ear\u00adly N64<\/span> games, Mario still looks like a king. Peach\u2019s Palace is inter\u00adest\u00ading\u00adly laid out and the graph\u00adi\u00adcal qual\u00adi\u00adty of the cas\u00adtle still blows away the com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adtion 20 years lat\u00ader. Watch\u00ading Mario run around, run and jump and be Mario but in a non-2D sprite is pure heav\u00aden for Mario lovers like myself. <\/span>
\nBut there\u2019s that block\u00adi\u00adness that I men\u00adtioned before. It\u2019s obvi\u00adous through\u00adout and can be jar\u00adring from time to time. And for motion sick\u00adness suf\u00adfer\u00aders like myself, the 3D<\/span> is nigh unbear\u00adable. It\u2019s all I can do not to vom\u00adit after 20 min\u00adutes, so my play\u00adtime is imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly lim\u00adit\u00aded because of the visu\u00adals. I should not be want\u00adi\u00adng to vom\u00adit after play\u00ading a Mario game.<\/span>
\nThe sound\u00adtrack makes up for the ill\u00adness-induc\u00ading game\u00adplay. The sound\u00adtrack is fan\u00adtas\u00adtic and it\u2019s wor\u00adthy of a main\u00adline Mario game, eas\u00adi\u00adly. From run\u00adning around in the plains of Bob-omb Bat\u00adtle\u00adfield to tra\u00advers\u00ading numer\u00adous obsta\u00adcles to take on the King of the Koopas, Mario 64 is a dream come true in terms of audio pleasure. <\/span>
\nAnd, this is, after all, the first com\u00admer\u00adcial game where Mario actu\u00adal\u00adly speaks. It\u2019s a joy to hear him squeal and squawk for the first time as he explores the var\u00adi\u00adous worlds. <\/span>
\nWith all of my neg\u00ada\u00adtive sen\u00adti\u00adments about the leap from 2D<\/span> to 3D<\/span> for Mario, I still appre\u00adci\u00adate the mas\u00adter\u00adpiece that is Mario 64. Ground\u00adbreak\u00ading and simul\u00adta\u00adne\u00adous\u00adly frustrating? <\/span>
\nYes. But it\u2019s frus\u00adtra\u00adtion worth hav\u00ading even if it takes a tum\u00adble down my list of great\u00adest games ever.<\/span><\/p>\n
