An epic cat and mouse game<\/span><\/p>\n

Cats in rock\u00adets try\u00ading to kill mice. As well as being weird, the age-old con\u00adcept of a cat-and-mouse game is sur\u00adpris\u00ading\u00adly addic\u00adtive. In the form of the Dream\u00adcast\u2019s ChuChu Rock\u00adet, the con\u00adcept man\u00adages to jump the bar\u00adri\u00ader of weird and branch into the realm of entertaining.<\/span><\/p>\n

The game of cat-and-mouse is sim\u00adple: Lead mice to safe\u00adty in your rock\u00adet with well-placed arrows while avoid\u00ading cats that oth\u00ader play\u00aders will send to hunt the mice. The more mice you have left alive at the end, the bet\u00adter. It\u2019s not hard to get start\u00aded once you have that basic under\u00adstand\u00ading of the game, and it quick\u00adly becomes an addict\u00ading exer\u00adcise of fran\u00adtic fun to keep mice alive.<\/span><\/p>\n

The fun thing about ChuChu Rock\u00adet is the sheer ran\u00addom\u00adness of every\u00adthing hap\u00adpen\u00ading on the play\u00ading field. There are so many fac\u00adtors that can affect your mice total at the end of a round that it\u2019s impos\u00adsi\u00adble to win by tal\u00adent at mov\u00ading rodents alone. One must con\u00adsid\u00ader the fact that only three arrows can be placed by a char\u00adac\u00adter at any giv\u00aden time. With lev\u00adel lay\u00adout also tak\u00aden into con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion, the idea that you can be in the lead for five sec\u00adonds and that be enough to win is a real pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty. Throw in the pow\u00ader-up aspect and con\u00adstant\u00adly chang\u00ading con\u00addi\u00adtions of the match area and there is a real recipe here for dis\u00adas\u00adter dis\u00adguised as fun.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a good thing that the game is so fun to play because the graph\u00adics and the music sure aren\u2019t going to draw you in by them\u00adselves. The game looks like a 1999 game, which isn\u2019t to say it\u2019s hor\u00adri\u00adble, but it isn\u2019t pret\u00adty, either. The graph\u00adics date them\u00adselves might\u00adi\u00adly, but that\u2019s not real\u00adly any\u00adthing to be ashamed of, since ChuChu Rock\u00adet does\u00adn\u2019t exact\u00adly need to get by on the qual\u00adi\u00adty of the scenery. The music is noth\u00ading to write home about, and frankly, I played with it turned off for the major\u00adi\u00adty of the time that I\u2019ve owned the game. It real\u00adly adds noth\u00ading to the over\u00adall expe\u00adri\u00adence and after a short time, it becomes rather irri\u00adtat\u00ading. But, like the graph\u00adics, it isn\u2019t real\u00adly what you came here for.<\/span><\/p>\n

What you\u2019re going to take away from ChuChu Rock\u00adet depends on what you\u2019re look\u00ading for. In this day and age, 15 years after its orig\u00adi\u00adnal release, you can take a sol\u00adid par\u00adty game from this that\u2019s a high\u00adly quirky title wor\u00adthy of many replays or you can see a weird 15-year-old game about cats chas\u00ading mice with ques\u00adtion\u00adable game con\u00addi\u00adtions attached. Rat infes\u00adta\u00adtion issues aside, ChuChu Rock\u00adet is a great rat race into nostalgia.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
