Mar\u00advel vs. Cap\u00adcom 2 a new age of frustration<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I have a polar\u00adiz\u00ading rela\u00adtion\u00adship with Mar\u00advel vs. Cap\u00adcom 2. While it\u2019s revered as one of the great\u00adest games of all time, and I spent a lot of time play\u00ading it, I don\u2019t love it as much as I once did. There are rea\u00adsons for my trans\u00adac\u00adtion\u00adal love for the Cap\u00adcom stal\u00adwart, and there are rea\u00adsons why it\u2019s tak\u00aden this long for Gam\u00ading Insur\u00adrec\u00adtion to engage.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mar\u00advel vs. Cap\u00adcom 2 rounds up every\u00adone who was present in the Ver\u00adsus uni\u00adverse, adds a few new faces and throws them togeth\u00ader to cre\u00adate a mashup of epic pro\u00adpor\u00adtions. Vet\u00ader\u00adans such as Mag\u00adne\u00adto, Dr. Doom, M. Bison, Ryu and Chun-Li join new\u00adcom\u00aders such as Ruby Heart, Cable and Amin\u00adgo. The rag\u00adtag mot\u00adley crew join forces to take on new vil\u00adlain Abyss, whose main goal is world dom\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion through decay. The sto\u00adry is engag\u00ading enough to jus\u00adti\u00adfy the col\u00adlid\u00ading of the respec\u00adtive uni\u00advers\u00ades but not too deep to jus\u00adti\u00adfy any sort of lore research.<\/span><\/p>\n

The mashup, how\u00adev\u00ader, is what is most impor\u00adtant. The meld\u00ading of realms and reunion of the pre\u00advi\u00adous games\u2019 ros\u00adter brings togeth\u00ader 56 char\u00adac\u00adters to make three-char\u00adac\u00adter teams. The over\u00adpow\u00adered gods of pre\u00advi\u00adous out\u00adings return to set up shop in the upper ech\u00ade\u00adlon of the game\u2019s tiers, and the joke char\u00adac\u00adters and non-essen\u00adtials also return for the ride. <\/span><\/p>\n

All of this is wrapped up in a futur\u00adis\u00adtic seri\u00adous-look\u00ading bow, com\u00adplete with a seri\u00adous announc\u00ader that lacks com\u00adic book trap\u00adpings. The back\u00adgrounds are mod\u00adeled well and are an impres\u00adsive leap from the pre\u00advi\u00adous hand-drawn entries. The sound\u00adtrack is also OK<\/span>. I\u2019m not one of the legions that appar\u00adent\u00adly hat\u00aded the sound\u00adtrack back in the day, and it\u2019s fine now. The smooth jazz has always fit the action, and I nev\u00ader saw what the prob\u00adlem was with it. Jazz has always been a part of the Ver\u00adsus series expe\u00adri\u00adence, and it did\u00adn\u2019t seem dif\u00adfer\u00adent this time around than any of the oth\u00ader games in the series. I\u2019ve always felt the response to the sound\u00adtrack was overblown and sil\u00adly. Focus on the more impor\u00adtant things that are wrong with the game.<\/span><\/p>\n


\nAnd here\u2019s where I want to put that focus and explore why it\u2019s the source of my ire and apa\u00adthy with MvC2. For a game that touts 56 char\u00adac\u00adters, in hind\u00adsight, only 10 are viable tour\u00adna\u00adment options. Yes, tour\u00adna\u00adments have been played with the low tier char\u00adac\u00adters, but his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly, the major tour\u00adna\u00adments of the day have always fea\u00adtured teams that have the Mar\u00advel 2 gods involved. You\u2019re going to see a Cable, Storm, Sen\u00adtinel, Mag\u00adne\u00adto or Iron Man in the top 3. You\u2019re going to see the same assists anchor\u00ading those teams as well. That\u2019s a prob\u00adlem. With that many char\u00adac\u00adters avail\u00adable, the same hand\u00adful of names should not be dom\u00adi\u00adnat\u00ading. There should be vari\u00adety. This has been a prob\u00adlem in the Mar\u00advel 2 tour\u00adna\u00adment scene since the first six months post release when every\u00adone fig\u00adured out the ini\u00adtial tech and real\u00adized Tiger Knee Hyper Viper Beam and Fly\u00ad\/Un-fly com\u00adbos were the way to vic\u00adto\u00adry. And, yes, I real\u00adize it\u2019s been 25 years since the game was released, new tech still pops up that makes char\u00adac\u00adters look bet\u00adter than they ever did, and ambas\u00adsadors such as Justin Wong use dif\u00adfer\u00adent teams to high\u00adlight this dis\u00adpar\u00adi\u00adty. But it was a mas\u00adsive prob\u00adlem back in the day and ruined the expe\u00adri\u00adence for me going forward.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mar\u00advel vs. Cap\u00adcom 2 gets near\u00adly every\u00adthing right: Evolved game\u00adplay with assists, clean\u00ader visu\u00adals and a gigan\u00adtic ros\u00adter with famil\u00adiar faces and cool addi\u00adtions. How\u00adev\u00ader, that near\u00adly is what breaks the game for me. I can\u2019t rec\u00adon\u00adcile my nos\u00adtal\u00adgia for the game and the time spent trav\u00adel\u00ading, meet\u00ading new peo\u00adple, the gift of Ruby Heart and lov\u00ading the Ver\u00adsus series with the absolute fool\u00adish\u00adness that is the game\u00adplay. This is the point of the Ver\u00adsus ride where I get off.<\/span><\/p>\n
