SNK<\/span> is still around doing things in this mod\u00adern fight\u00ading game land\u00adscape. Their lat\u00adest release, Garou: City of the Wolves, is a cer\u00adti\u00adfied banger and is get\u00adting a lot of play in the crit\u00adic sphere because the orig\u00adi\u00adnal is so beloved. And that\u2019s one of the best things Mark of the Wolves man\u00adaged to do: Leave a good lega\u00adcy and stay rel\u00ade\u00advant 25 years later.<\/span>
\nMark of the Wolves does a lot of things with the Fatal Fury name for the sake of progress. Tak\u00ading place 10 years after the death of crime lord Geese Howard dur\u00ading the King of Fight\u00aders Tour\u00adna\u00adment as depict\u00aded in Real Bout Fatal Fury, Mark intro\u00adduces a new cast with Ter\u00adry Bog\u00ada\u00adrd return\u00ading to the fray to lead the charge. Ter\u00adry takes the young Rock Howard, Geese\u2019s scion, under his wing to fight for South Town and jus\u00adtice in gen\u00ader\u00adal. But the specter of Geese haunts them. And there is a new vil\u00adlain in the mix, Kain, to take Geese\u2019s place and up the stakes. The plot is inter\u00adest\u00ading and engag\u00ading. Get\u00adting used to a whole new cast minus Ter\u00adry takes a minute and learn\u00ading their back\u00adground and moti\u00adva\u00adtion is fun.

\nThe char\u00adac\u00adter designs are cool, as they are in most SNK<\/span> games. The sprites look great and are large and detailed. The back\u00adgrounds, while col\u00ador\u00adful, aren\u2019t near\u00adly as detailed, though there are a lot of ani\u00adma\u00adtions going on that make them live\u00adly. Over\u00adall, the look isn\u2019t too dif\u00adfer\u00adent than what you\u2019d expect from an SNK<\/span> arcade game, but the Dream\u00adcast does give it a lit\u00adtle boost. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>The sound\u00adtrack is a lit\u00adtle gener\u00adic, which is sur\u00adpris\u00ading because I was expect\u00ading some nice tracks. I\u2019m spoiled by the often-maligned SvC Chaos, which had a great sound\u00adtrack despite the sur\u00adround\u00ading mess, because it was released in the same era by SNK<\/span>. How\u00adev\u00ader, despite the gener\u00adic under\u00adtones, the sound\u00adtrack does\u00adn\u2019t deter the sur\u00adround\u00ading over\u00adall product.

\nAnd the sur\u00adround\u00ading prod\u00aduct, game\u00adplay-wise, is fine. New mechan\u00adics, like the Tac\u00adti\u00adcal Offense Posi\u00adtion and Just Defend, are wel\u00adcome new pieces in the series\u2019 reper\u00adtoire. Just Defend, which is like Street Fight\u00ader III\u2019s par\u00adry mechan\u00adic, has hung around and made appear\u00adances in oth\u00ader games such as Cap\u00adcom vs. SNK<\/span> 2\u2019s K\u2011Groove so I\u2019d say it\u2019s a good addi\u00adtion 25 years lat\u00ader. And with the new mechan\u00adics, the game plays well, too. If I could pick it up and play it with lit\u00adtle expo\u00adsure to SNK\u2019s style of fight\u00ading and do well, it\u2019s safe to say that Mark has a good feel. That feel is present in the var\u00adied modes, with Sur\u00advival as the most fun out of all offered.

\nMark is a great fight\u00ading game and still holds up well. It has the attrac\u00adtion of ear\u00adly 2000s fight\u00ading game finesse, and it serves as a good intro\u00adduc\u00adtion to the world of SNK<\/span> if you\u2019re not well-versed in the series. A well-round\u00aded fight\u00ading game with strong mechan\u00adics and good envi\u00adron\u00adment are the marks of a future legend.<\/span><\/p>\n
