Start\u00ading at the beginning<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Street Fight\u00ader Alpha sets the tone for spin\u00adoff franchise<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I promise I can see the poten\u00adtial in the orig\u00adi\u00adnal Street Fight\u00ader Alpha: War\u00adriors\u2019 Dreams. I can look down from my high perch of love for Alpha 3 and accept that the series came from some\u00adwhere. After all, every series must have a start. But it\u2019s a long hard stretch to say it\u2019s an all-time great start.<\/span><\/p>\n

Street Fight\u00ader Alpha estab\u00adlish\u00ades the series\u2019 sto\u00adry: After Ryu wins the first World Fight\u00ading Tour\u00adna\u00adment (as depict\u00aded in Street Fight\u00ader), he returns home to find his mas\u00adter Gouken mur\u00addered and sets out to get revenge. At the same time, Chun-Li, Guile and Char\u00adlie \u2014 along with oth\u00ader var\u00adi\u00adous mem\u00adbers of the cast such as new\u00adcom\u00ader Rose \u2014 work togeth\u00ader to take down M. Bison, who is work\u00ading to estab\u00adlish his empire and achieve world dom\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion. Know two things about the sto\u00adry: One, it\u2019s a sequel to 1987\u2019s Street Fight\u00ader and a pre\u00adquel to Street Fight\u00ader II<\/span>; and, two, its sto\u00adry\u00adline is sup\u00adplant\u00aded by Street Fight\u00ader Alpha 2. Cap\u00adcom deployed this strat\u00ade\u00adgy with the Darkstalkers\/Vampire series as well, which was coin\u00adci\u00adden\u00adtal\u00adly cre\u00adat\u00aded around the same time as Alpha. And this isn\u2019t the only instance of crossover con\u00adcepts, either.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alpha plays and feels much like ear\u00adly Vam\u00adpire as well. The new addi\u00adtions of mul\u00adti-lev\u00adel super com\u00adbos and air block\u00ading are here, too, and like Vam\u00adpire, rep\u00adre\u00adsent an upgrade from the days of Super Tur\u00adbo. But, as much as I like the upgrad\u00aded mechan\u00adics, I don\u2019t like how Alpha plays. It feels clunky and slow with a molasses edge to the movesets. While the series did even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly improve with time and speed adjust\u00adments, it\u2019s painful\u00adly obvi\u00adous here that it need\u00aded a speed boost.<\/span><\/p>\n


\nAlpha also resem\u00adbles Vam\u00adpire in pre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion. The graph\u00adics are nice and big, and the sprites are nice\u00adly drawn. It\u2019s an ear\u00adly ver\u00adsion of the Alpha 3 pre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion that we\u2019ve come to know and love, and it\u2019s pleas\u00ading to see it here. The music isn\u2019t at the Alpha 3 lev\u00adel yet, but there are a few tracks that might make you tap your toe. <\/span><\/p>\n

What I want\u00aded from the first game in the Alpha series shows up lat\u00ader in the final game, but the start isn\u2019t ter\u00adri\u00adble. It need\u00aded some work and giv\u00aden that Alpha 2 made improve\u00adments on this sol\u00adid foun\u00adda\u00adtion in Alpha, I think it\u2019s safe to call this the beta of the Alpha series.<\/span><\/p>\n
