Dante, Dante, Dante. Cap\u00adcom\u2019s res\u00adi\u00addent demon hunter\/investigator has con\u00adtributed great\u00adly to the com\u00adpa\u00adny\u2019s for\u00adtunes. From var\u00adi\u00adous mer\u00adchan\u00addise and endorse\u00adment deals to a Net\u00adflix series due lat\u00ader this year, Dante is liv\u00ading large. How\u00adev\u00ader, there are games in the Dev\u00adil May Cry series that almost destroyed his ris\u00ading star. Dev\u00adil May Cry 2 is one of those games.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Dev\u00adil May Cry 2, Dante and a new com\u00adpan\u00adion, Lucia, join forces to bat\u00adtle demons led by an inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal busi\u00adness\u00adman named Arius whose com\u00adpa\u00adny called Uroboros estab\u00adlish\u00ades itself on the island of Vie de Mar\u00adli. Arius\u2019 true goal is to find holy relics called Arcanas so that he can obtain the pow\u00aders of the ancient demon Argosax. Now locked in a race against time, Dante and Lucia must bat\u00adtle against Argosax and put an end to Arius\u2019 mad\u00adness before the world is plunged into eter\u00adnal darkness. <\/span><\/p>\n

DMC2\u2019s graph\u00adics and pre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion had a nice approach instead of the usu\u00adal hap\u00adhaz\u00adard scenery found in most hack-and-slash games. It\u2019s nice that the DMC2<\/span> devel\u00adop\u00adment team took inspi\u00adra\u00adtion from West\u00adern Europe and the Mediter\u00adranean region and com\u00adbined that with var\u00adi\u00adous ele\u00adments from Japan\u00adese, Latin and Greek cul\u00adtures and var\u00adi\u00adous reli\u00adgious ele\u00adments. How\u00adev\u00ader, the parts of the deal\u00adbreak\u00ader with DMC2<\/span> soon appeared with var\u00adi\u00adous scenes as poor\u00adly done clay sculptures. <\/span><\/p>\n

Fur\u00adther in the game, the graph\u00adics became more of a dis\u00adap\u00adpoint\u00adment, despite giv\u00ading lee\u00adway to the PlaySta\u00adtion 2\u2019s hard\u00adware capa\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties in its ear\u00adly years. One of the most glar\u00ading issues involved the cam\u00adera. The in-game cam\u00adera was weird and clunky, zoom\u00ading in and out odd\u00adly in under\u00adground areas. And, it was too rigid when it need\u00aded to move with Dante. The con\u00adtrols were tank-like \u2014 Cap\u00adcom\u2019s nor\u00admal stan\u00addard oper\u00ada\u00adtional pro\u00adce\u00addure \u2014 but it was more annoy\u00ading when I was shoot\u00ading at ene\u00admies long dis\u00adtance and wast\u00ading ammo and mobil\u00adi\u00adty. The tank\u00ading of Dante is counter to him being agile, which was a major sell\u00ading point that cat\u00ada\u00adpult\u00aded him to star\u00addom. Anoth\u00ader issue was that the in-game store sold var\u00adi\u00adous skill and weapon upgrades includ\u00ading health items but were ridicu\u00adlous\u00adly expen\u00adsive despite me hav\u00ading the abil\u00adi\u00adty to gath\u00ader more coins seam\u00adless\u00adly here than in the orig\u00adi\u00adnal game. That\u2019s a major turnoff because it\u2019s a chore. More work for more expen\u00adsive rewards is not fun.<\/span><\/p>\n

The music of DMC2<\/span> was ser\u00advice\u00adable; it feels like Cap\u00adcom\u2019s renowned music team was told to phone in their work that was at best chop\u00adpy but accept\u00adable. That\u2019s a shame because all of it just seems mediocre and not the best that Cap\u00adcom could do for a series of DMC\u2019s caliber.<\/span><\/p>\n

While Cap\u00adcom attempt\u00aded to strike hot with a glob\u00adal smash-hit prop\u00ader\u00adty, they man\u00adaged to fail because they treat DMC2<\/span> like their oth\u00ader crit\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly acclaimed series (Mega Man, Rival Schools, the Ver\u00adsus series and Onimusha) not named Street Fight\u00ader: like FLAMING<\/span> GARBAGE<\/span>. As a fan of DMC<\/span>, Mega Man, Onimusha and var\u00adi\u00adous Cap\u00adcom games, I\u2019m incensed that these titles are beloved glob\u00adal\u00adly, yet Cap\u00adcom does very lit\u00adtle or noth\u00ading to do prop\u00ader pro\u00admo\u00adtion for them, yet they prof\u00adit HUGELY<\/span> from them. Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, Dante fell vic\u00adtim to the Cap\u00adcom curse for which he can\u00adnot blame his black sheep broth\u00ader \u2014 this time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dev\u00adil May Cry 2 should have been the light\u00adning that struck twice. For\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly for Dante and Co., Cap\u00adcom man\u00adage\u00adment saw the fol\u00adlies of mis\u00adtreat\u00adment of a hot prop\u00ader\u00adty and applied lessons learned in its future install\u00adments. As we say in GI<\/span> HQ<\/span>, \u201cKnow bet\u00adter, do bet\u00adter.\u201d Cap\u00adcom should have done bet\u00adter with this sequel because they knew bet\u00adter. Dante should have been able to keep it styl\u00adish, but this is a major stum\u00adble in an oth\u00ader\u00adwise stel\u00adlar jack\u00adpot of a series.<\/span><\/p>\n
