Mario Kart races back to form in Wii U edition<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\nThere comes a time in every Mario Kart fan\u2019s life when you have to make a choice of whether you still love the series or if you don\u2019t. I assume this, of course, because I have no idea if any\u00adone still plays Mario Kart or not. I assume they do, and I just don\u2019t know it. The series hit that fabled peak of ques\u00adtion\u00adabil\u00adi\u00adty for me when Mario Kart Wii was released. GI<\/span> wasn\u2019t using a rat\u00ading scale when we reviewed it (editor\u2019s note: This was reviewed in 3Q2008<\/span><\/a><\/em>), but suf\u00adfice to say it would not have received a good score. Mario Kart had a lot of work to redeem itself for me, a long\u00adtime lover of the series who start\u00aded in 1992. The lat\u00adest orig\u00adi\u00adnal entry, Mario Kart 8, has made sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant effort to pol\u00adish the series again.<\/span>\nMario Kart, at its core, has always been about arcade rac\u00ading. There\u2019s noth\u00ading real\u00adis\u00adtic about play\u00ading as var\u00adi\u00adous Mario and oth\u00ader gen\u00ader\u00adal Nin\u00adten\u00addo char\u00adac\u00adters while romp\u00ading through var\u00adi\u00adous Mush\u00adroom King\u00addom locales. It\u2019s always been about the Mario charm expand\u00aded to fit with\u00adin a palat\u00adable dri\u00adving scheme that makes any\u00adone a cham\u00adpi\u00adon go-kart enthu\u00adsi\u00adast. Mario Kart 8 does not shirk on this charm. If it\u2019s a mem\u00ado\u00adrable Mario char\u00adac\u00adter, they\u2019re prob\u00ada\u00adbly in this game. <\/span>\nAnd, in a nod to the appeal of Nin\u00adten\u00addo crossover and nos\u00adtal\u00adgia, there are new addi\u00adtions from out\u00adside the port\u00adly mus\u00adta\u00adchioed plumber\u2019s usu\u00adal sus\u00adpects: You can now play as Ani\u00admal Crossing\u2019s Isabelle and The Leg\u00adend of Zelda\u2019s Link. While they don\u2019t nec\u00ades\u00adsar\u00adi\u00adly con\u00adtribute any\u00adthing new to the series, their pres\u00adence is enough to elic\u00adit excite\u00adment because it means Nin\u00adten\u00addo is final\u00adly open\u00ading Mario Kart up to the gen\u00ader\u00adal ros\u00adter. There is much to mine from, and if you\u2019re ques\u00adtion\u00ading any of this, look at the lead Smash Bros. has tak\u00aden in this field.<\/span>\nMario Kart has always been the sort of series that takes its his\u00adto\u00adry seri\u00adous\u00adly. Entries after Mario Kart: Dou\u00adble Dash have begun ref\u00ader\u00adenc\u00ading the pre\u00advi\u00adous tracks of yore, some\u00adtimes with var\u00adied results. Mario Kart 8 man\u00adages to gath\u00ader a lot of stel\u00adlar new tracks and some old that aren\u2019t favorites but will suf\u00adfice as entries. A lot of the old\u00ader tracks are from more recent entries but make no mis\u00adtake \u2014 they are there for the pur\u00adpose of draw\u00ading you in to remind you of the good times and then send you on your mer\u00adry way to try the new tracks. Tug\u00adging at my heart strings with a mod\u00adern SNES<\/span> Rain\u00adbow Road remake will get you every\u00adwhere, though there are caveats to these remakes. <\/span>\nWhile the tracks are great graph\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly, the music is hit or miss. When I say I want a Rain\u00adbow Road throw\u00adback, I also want the orig\u00adi\u00adnal music to go with it. It doesn\u2019t need a musi\u00adcal over\u00adhaul because the orig\u00adi\u00adnal music was bril\u00adliant. I\u2019m not sure why Nin\u00adten\u00addo thought it need\u00aded to have the sound remade, but it wasn\u2019t a par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly great deci\u00adsion. Oth\u00ader remas\u00adtered stage choic\u00ades, includ\u00ading Grum\u00adble Vol\u00adcano and Music Park, are fine. And a lot of the new tracks are great; Drag\u00adon Drift\u00adway and Excite\u00adbike Are\u00adna are def\u00adi\u00adnite standouts.<\/span>\nGraph\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly, the game looks amaz\u00ading. It\u2019s the best-look\u00ading Mario Kart pro\u00adduced yet. All the char\u00adac\u00adters look life-like, and the stages are incred\u00adi\u00adbly detailed. Even the water par\u00adti\u00adcle effects look amaz\u00ading. There are times when there\u2019s a brief lull in action that I can soak up the sur\u00adround\u00adings, and I\u2019m impressed by the Wii U\u2019s under\u00adstat\u00aded capa\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty. Mario Kart 8 shows what the sys\u00adtem could poten\u00adtial\u00adly do. It\u2019s a tes\u00adta\u00adment also to just how good Mario Kart looks in the mod\u00adern era.<\/span>\nNow, here\u2019s where we may have some issues. I\u2019m not fond of the AI<\/span> rub\u00adber\u00adband\u00ading, and I haven\u2019t been a fan of it since the Mario Kart 64 days. We are a quar\u00adter of a cen\u00adtu\u00adry grown up and past that, and we\u2019re still hav\u00ading issues with last-minute vic\u00adto\u00adries by the AI<\/span>. This is a known issue at this point, yet it rears its ugly head still. Also, while a lot of the new tracks are cool \u2014 Excite\u00adbike Are\u00adna among the best of the bunch \u2014 there are some that do absolute\u00adly noth\u00ading for me. Track selec\u00adtion is impor\u00adtant, and this entry has dullards. Big Blue, for what\u00adev\u00ader rea\u00adson, keeps show\u00ading up in mod\u00adern catchall Nin\u00adten\u00addo games, and it\u2019s here, too. I\u2019m not impressed with the track at all, and they could have come up with some\u00adthing else. <\/span>\nAlso, while I love the Ani\u00admal Cross\u00ading track, it needs some\u00adthing else than the series\u2019 cute motif and catchy music. It\u2019s your basic, run of the mill dri\u00adve around in a loop track, but it needs some\u00adthing else to give it some pop. Same thing goes for the Hyrule track. It\u2019s basic, too. What makes this worse is that the tracks are part of the DLC<\/span> bun\u00addle for the game. If you\u2019re ask\u00ading me to spend hard-earned mon\u00adey on extras, the extras need to be super spe\u00adcial. I\u2019m not get\u00adting that with those two tracks, specif\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly. Thank\u00adful\u00adly, there are oth\u00ader extras to be had that kind of make up for those.<\/span>\nOver\u00adall, this is a sol\u00adid entry in the Mario Kart sphere of influ\u00adence. This is the best entry in years, and it deserves some high praise for a lot of the things that it gets right.
