News update: Mortal Kombat arcade collection announced!

NetherRealm Studios will push MK1-3 package to market later this year

By Lyndsey Mosley/Gaming Insurrection

In a reversal of a published story this quarter in GI, NetherRealm Studios has announced the Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection for later this summer.

The actual collection, a downloadable title, will feature MK1, MKII and Ultimate MK3 and will be released for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. Other features included are online play for the three games,  leaderboards and support for Achievements and Trophies.

A tournament stick will be released. The Klassic arcade stick, from Performance Designed Products, will retail for $129.99 at GameStop and will include a download token for the collection. PDP released the companion tournament controller for the recent Mortal Kombat, the reboot of the series from NetherRealm, the new studio led by Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon.

GI recently published a story in its Retro Game Corner section for 2Q2011 that focused on the rumors of an HD collection being released in the near future. The collection comes on the heels of MKII being removed from the PlayStation Network and Ultimate MK3 being removed from Xbox Live Arcade.

MK live action trailer reaction

The live-action Mortal Kombat trailer was sick! I was nearly moved to tears to see my favorite fighting game franchise rise from the ashes and blow minds like that. I am so impressed with everything: I loved the new backstories, the introduction to key characters from MK2 (my favorite in the series), the acting, the fight scenes … everything.

I have said since MK4 that the series really needed to move back to its roots completely to get back to the awesomeness that was MK’s early days and this looks like the way to go. Way to go MK team! Even if this is just a teaser for MK: Devastation (I don’t think it is, but there’s hope), I don’t care: It still looked awesome. The production values were high and the attention to character backgrounds was GREAT. I liked that they explained what made the characters who they were and I could easily identify who was who. I’m guessing it’s going to start with MK2, which is a good thing.

Kudos again, MK team! For the first time in a long time I’m excited about the direction of the series. For a longtime fan who disliked all later entries starting with MK4, this is a welcome return home.

Tokyo Game Show 2009 starts today!

One of the best gaming conventions gets underway today in Tokyo. All of the major gaming press outlets are covering the three-day show, but we’re merely content to just watch from the sidelines. Gaming Insurrection can’t really cover the show like we could E3 and I would rather just read about the developments. Maybe next year for coverage.TGSlogo-web

So what’s big that’s come out of the show so far? Here’s a sample:

Motion control  for titles such as Resident Evil 5 and Little Big Planet

Sony of Japan detailed this during the keynote speech delivered by SCE chief Kaz Hirai and demonstration by David Ellis. What we do know from the demonstration is that a patch will be available for LBP to allow for the upcoming support. RE5’s control will change by way of an onscreen shooting reticule. Interesting take on two popular games. This will possibly get the motion control app off the ground for Sony.

New Last Guardian video available  has posted a video of footage from the show floor of The Last Guardian, which is sort of a follow up to Ico and Shadows of the Colossus. The game still looks gorgeous, and the gameplay looks a little more fleshed out.

Microsoft: 12 major developers have confirmed Natal work

Also from, apparently some major players in the game industry have jumped on the Natal bandwagon for Microsoft. 1up is reporting names such as Ubisoft, Square Enix and Capcom are practically in love with the device and are lined up ready to pop out games that will use it extensively.

Nintendo confirms Wii price drop

File this under the category of stuff we already know, but the leaked screens of the rumored Wii price drop were apparently true. Nintendo confirmed it today and said the console’s asking price is dropping $50 to $199. Well I would hope that it would have gone down a little further given that the system will be three years old in about two months and there are about four good games for it. And before anybody asks, yes, I have a Wii and yes, I do play it from time to time.

EGM is back!

A few days ago, we heard some really great news: Electronic Gaming Monthly will return to publishing! Founder Steve Harris bought the rights to the magazine from Ziff-Davis Media and is planning to put out issues again.

This is so wonderful that I can’t fully express it in words. Word on the street is he’s looking to bring back magazine favorites who were interested in returning. That would be nice. According to multiple posts on, the magazine is expected to return somewhere during the second half of 2009. I, for one, will rock a subscription again. I haven’t had a subscription since 2002 but I would pick up issues if they caught my eye on the rack. The last two issues I bought were the final issue and the Japan issue because it looked phenomenal.

To see the new site (it’s bare bones right now), visit

Long live EGM!

North Korea Invades U.S. In 'Homefront"

THQ announced today that Homefront, a first-person shooter, is centered on North Korea invading U.S.

The story of Homefront sees an energy-starved United States collapsing into economic ruin, leading to an invasion by North Korea in 2027. Homefront puts players amongst the “American Civilian Resistance” in its battle to repel the North Korean occupiers.

The game’s script is written by John Milius. Milius is best known for writing “Apocalypse Now” and creating the TV series “Rome.”

I look forward to saving my “Homefront.”

BioShock 2 To Hit Stores

2K Marin’s BioShock 2 will hit the shelves on November 3. Just in time for everyone to put it on their holiday list.

But do they have to taunt us with pictures and videos until then. This game looks awesome.

"Just say No!"

A gaming show you should be aware of …

I don’t watch much TV, though I have my favorite shows. I do like watching shows geared toward gamers (i.e. Attack of the Show, X-Play). These days, since I don’t have cable or satellite, I rely on Internet shows to get me by. Enter Area 5.

The guys over at are Ryan O’Donnell, Matt Chandronait, Rob Bowen, Cesar Quintero, Jason Bertrand and the adorable Jay Frechette. All are former staffers of (see the previous post on the demise of EGM for an idea of what I’m getting at) who have come together to make an amazing show: CO-OP. I’ve been a faithful viewer since season 1, I download the weekly episodes and they are my start page in Firefox.

Why? Quite simply, the guys are awesome.

The shows revolve around a running narrative of their lives and video games. What more could you ask for? I love the segments and several episodes (most notably season 2’s “Selling CO-OP”) have made me laugh out loud. Support these guys. I love their concept, what they’re trying to do on a weekly basis. If I could, I would do it, too. The shows look stunning because of the great equipment they have. I also really love the way they sit around and discuss games. With an informal atmosphere, I think the viewer can get more comfortable with the show and know what to look forward to in each episode. Besides, they’re funny, knowledgeable and apparently live in one of the nicest places on Earth for creativity. If you have Digg, help them out or go to their Revision3 site.

I would really like for them to stick around.

And yes, Jay Fresh is hot, despite my very married status. ^_^

Racism in Resident Evil 5

I have been hearing a lot of talk about racism in the new Resident Evil. Capcom making a racist game just doesn’t make sense to me. I mean, they made Street Fighter. Street Fighter takes place in many different countries, with many different kinds people. Unless they are trying to make Resident Evil into a bad ‘B’ horror movie, it doesn’t make sense to have something that would cause people to think it is racist.

While I was at the local Play ‘N’ Trade recently it happened to be Resident Evil Friday. Play ‘N’ Trade allows you to play the games before you buy them, and I wanted to see what was considered so racist about it. How bad could it be?

The game takes place in Africa and you play as Chris Redfield. Yes, Chris is a Caucasian. Chris also is destroying “infected persons.” Since you are in Africa, the infected will be mostly dark-skinned people. That was the concern of Newsweek editor N’Gai Croal: A white man killing dark skinned zombies.  He stated, “There was a lot of imagery in that trailer that dovetailed with classic racist imagery.”

The imagery that he was referring to was the RE 5 trailer that was released when the game was announced. He didn’t know that it took place in Africa but he did acknowledge that he only came to this conclusion shortly after the preview was released.

Seeing that Chris Redfield is fluent only in killing zombies and “infected” persons, Capcom decided that Chris needs a partner. Since Jill is dead, Capcom introduced Sheva Alomar, a native to the country. You can either have a friend pick up another controller or just let the A.I. take over.

I played the game until Sheva died by a chainsaw wielding “infected.” I realized then that racism was in Resident Evil. Thanks to Resident Evil and Left 4 Dead, I am now racist against all zombies. I don’t care what race they were before they were became zombies. Even “infected” people – living zombies – I am beginning to dislike. In fact, I am so racist about zombies and living zombies that I believe that they should all die.

All of them except for Stubbs. He isn’t like the rest of them.
